Purpose of Position :

As a member of the Grundy Lake Provincial Park team, under the general supervision of the Park Superintendent, to carry our a variety of technical duties, program responsibilities and group leadership for the park interpretive and visitor services programs.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Job Requires:
• Providing technical, operational, monitoring and group leadership duties for the Natural Heritage Program by:
o Preparing the NHE Operating Plan and year-end reports
o Organizing, directing and evaluating the park interpretive program
o Organizing, scheduling and providing recreational and naturalist activities to be featured during the operating season, such as guided hikes, guest speakers, slide presentations, children's programs and special events
o Assisting in the preparation and submission of news releases, announcements, and general information on the park to the local media
o Organizing and preparing displays, exhibits and local information pamphlets for the park
o Collecting and organizing data and statistics as required
o Participating in interpretive trail development, maintenance and information systems
o Providing general information about the park, surrounding area and activities
o Preparing purchase orders for visitor service supplies and making recommendations on visitor services equipments purchases
o Providing group leadership to unclassified staff and students on behalf of the Park Superintendent, including recommending staff hiring, assigning daily work, monitoring the quality and quantity of work, explaining work methods/policy & procedures, monitoring performance for input to performance management process, monitoring adherence to policy, identifying staff training needs, ensuring staff compliance to the Occupational Health and Safety Requirements.
o Conducting administrative duties including preparing and updating reports, assisting with hiring and performance management process, signing out and tracking of various inventories.
• Assisting in the implementation of resource management programs by:
o Assisting in the maintenance of collections and park library, collection of statistics, advertising and slide collection
o Overseeing, gathering, recording and carrying out inventories of natural and/or cultural features as requested
o Completing year-end reports and recommending improvements and/or changes
• Other duties such as:
o Providing general maintenance such as housekeeping and minor repairs of Natural Heritage Education facilities and picking up of litter
o Assisting in the training and leadership of Regular Student and Summer Experience Program employees
o Assisting other members of the Park team during vacation/sickness and peak workload periods
o Promoting user compliance with park rules and regulations
o Acting as duty officer as required

Note: The incumbent shall, while in the workplace, conduct themselves in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, and any workplace policies, procedures or practices as directed by their immediate supervisor, report all work related injuries and illnesses to their immediate supervisor

Managers have the right to assign additional duties

Staffing and Licencing :

Valid Ontario Drivers Licence
Valid Emergency First Aid certificate

Knowledge :

Job requires:
• Knowledge of resource management principles and techniques as they apply to parks.
• Knowledge of park programs, services and operating regulations
• Knowledge of natural history, cultural history and recreational skills development
• Knowledge of natural sciences, eg. flora, fauna, geology
• Knowledge of relevant acts, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines
• Knowledge of personal computers, including word-processing, record-keeping, internet and email software applications
• Knowledge of graphic programs, digital cameras, scanners
• Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations

Skills :

Job requires:
• Presentation, oral and written communication skills
• Interpersonal and public relations skills to effectively deal with large groups of visitors of various age groups and backgrounds, customer service skills
• Organizational skills, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
• Ability to operate and maintain audio-visual equipment, photography and public address equipment
• Ability to operate personal computers including word processing, record keeping, internet and email software applications
• Ability to work shifts, in inclement weather conditions and various types of terrain
• Ability to provide group leadership

Freedom of Action :

• Job requires working within the procedural controls of legislation and regulations and ministry and government policies, manuals, guidelines, directives and established practices.
• Job requires working in a team environment and to accept responsibility for actions taken and work carried out
• Job requires that matters of a contentious nature be referred to supervisor (e.g. poor performance of staff member's, interpersonal conflicts, performance issues of staff member, non routine expenditures, and operational changes/abnormalities
• Job requires performing tasks under general supervision of Park Superintendent and works independently to establish work priorities and resolve issues within established government procedures, policies and directives
