Purpose of Position :

As a member of Forests Branch, provides input and support in the development, maintenance, and implementation of a wide range of program areas such as: forest information management, provincial reporting, independent forest audits, forest operations compliance monitoring, forest competency, forest certification, forest health and silviculture, forest management planning, and forest policy.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Under the leadership of senior section staff, assists in implementation of Forests Branch programs by:

• Applying knowledge of legislation, theory, principles and practices of resource management to provide information and advice on questions related to sustainable forest management;
• Providing basic forestry knowledge in harvest practices, silviculture, forest stand dynamics and environmental impacts on non timber resources;
• Participating on project teams as assigned;
• Investigating approaches and procedures and drafting documents which outline standard operating procedures;
• Investigating assigned components of proposed documents, developing options and recommendations, and producing drafts of material;
• Investigating techniques and procedures for efficient delivery and implementation of products/projects, developing options and recommendations, and implementing required actions;
• Researching background information, both textual and on websites, undertaking literature reviews, and compiling summaries as may be required;
• Investigating and undertaking comparative analysis of policy approaches used in jurisdictions outside of Ontario as may be required;
• Undertaking activities that may be required in support of implementation of projects (eg. Drafting and/or arranging for communications material, undertaking general correspondence with client groups, responding to routine inquiries from the public, etc.)
• Assisting in training and transfer programs by producing presentation materials, developing graphics, assisting with logistical support, distribution of materials to participants, etc.
• Participating in section meetings, client group meetings, conference calls, etc. as required; and
• Participating in events and opportunities identified in the Intern Learning Plan and other mutually beneficial opportunities that may arise in-year

Staffing and Licencing :

N/A

Knowledge :

Basic working knowledge of forest management and environmental impacts on non-timber forest resources. Some working knowledge of legislation, policies, and procedures governing forest management in Ontario including current forest management principles, practices, and guides used in the Boreal Forest and Great Lakes-St. Lawrence/Deciduous Forest Regions. Basic understanding of ecosystem sustainability, wildlife habitat management, and biodiversity. Basic knowledge of computer applications and modelling. Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the OH&S Act.


Skills :

Good interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written). Good organizational and project management skills. Basic analytical skills and some knowledge of current analytical resource models.
