Purpose of Position :

To assist the Remote Airport Foreman/ Woman in the maintenance and operation of a remote northern airport and in the construction and maintenance of roads.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Operate and maintain equipment to construct and maintain the airfield and road by the following:
• operates heavy equipment such as grader, bulldozer, front end loader, dump trucks, compaction unit, and power and hand tools. Where provided, also operates snowblower, runway sweeper and truck with sander;
• performs the routine daily and weekly preventative maintenance procedures on the equipment;
• performs equipment repairs such as changing components (starters, alternators, etc.), repairing flat tires, changing fluids, adjusting components, etc.;
• assisting trades people in the repair of the vehicles, equipment, buildings and utilities;
• clean and wash equipment.

2. Maintain and repair airport buildings and utilities by:
• painting, repairing doors and windows, etc. and performing emergency repairs to buildings and utilities such as repairing leaking
• roofs, furnaces, water lines, septic tanks, etc.;
clean building by sweeping, washing and/or waxing floors and walls, windows, etc.

3. Assist the supervisor to effectively operate and maintain the airport by the following:
• inspect and repair the runway, runway lights flare pots, wind cone, rotating light beacon and other visual aids on a daily basis;
• performs adjustments and/ or repairs to airfield lighting system such as replacing lenses, splicing broken wires, etc.;
• monitors radio receivers for aircraft transmissions while operating equipment on the airfield;
• assists in maintaining security of the airfield by ensuring only authorized personnel are allowed on the airfield and that the carrier's agents control passengers on the ramp;
• provides services to airfield users and maintains airfield operating areas in the absence of the Foreman/ Woman when he/ she is on holidays and during winter shift schedule period;
• provides emergency response services to aircraft and others by operating the airport fire extinguishers to extinguish fires on aircraft and assist aircrew in evacuating passengers from the aircraft areas;
• prepares statistical and administrative data such as aircraft movements, airport diaries, time sheets, revenue billings, fuel usage, issue Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), etc.;
• notifying Transport Canada Flight Service Station by telephone or radio when equipment, etc. is entering on any location on the airfield where a plan could land;
• arranging for runway illumination for medical or emergency flights when airfield lighting system is unserviceable

4. Assist the supervisor to perform administrative, safety and general duties by the following:
• performs safety inspections of the extinguishers, first aid kits and refills or restocks as required;
• collects and prepares for shipment of hazardous wastes such as used motor oil, batteries, battery acid, antifreeze, varsol, etc.;
• supervises occasional unclassified labourers and students employed at the airport.

5. Perform other related duties such as:
• performing duties of airport foreman/women in his/her absence;
• receiving and shipping of supplies and material;
• working on a temporary basis at other airports;
• performs other related duties as required.

SPECIAL NOTES:
Sites are in remote northern Ontario with prolonged cold winters from October to May. Employees must occasionally travel to other sites on small aircraft and to supply and cook own meals.


Staffing and Licencing :

Ability to obtain a DZ driver's licence. Ability to obtain a Restricted Radio Operator's Licence.

Knowledge :

Basic knowledge of airport operations; knowledge of servicing and minor mechanical repairs for equipment and vehicles; knowledge and ability to perform repairs to buildings and utilities; knowledge of emergency level first aid and WHIMIS; knowledge of basic fire fighting procedures using small chemical fire extinguishers and other agents such as water, sand, etc.

Skills :

Ability to operate all type “A” and “B” equipment at the airport. Ability to organize, allocated and review work of temporary labourers; ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, pumps, compressors, arc welder, oxy/acetylene equipment; ability to read, write and speak English.
