Purpose of Position :

Under the direction of the Senior Pilot to act as Co-Pilot on CL 415 aircraft operating under Visual and Instrument Flight Rules supporting forest fire suppression on behalf of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Government of Ontario.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Act as Co-Pilot on CL 415 fixed wing waterbomber aircraft operating under Visual and Instrument Flight Rules by:

• Operating aircraft in accordance with the Aeronautics Act, Transport Canada's Canadian Aviation Regulations, Ministry Air Operations, Standard Operating Procedures and Aircraft Flight Manuals;
• Assessing the operational environment to ensure that the required mission objectives are met in a safe and efficient manner;
• Apply good airmanship , sound pilot decision making and crew resources management skills to ensure that a safe and efficient environment is maintained for both crew and aircraft;
following all Ministry Policy and Procedures;
• ensuring compliance as outlined in Standard Operating Procedures and the Air Operations Manual;
• working closely with the Aviation Service Centre and regional fire dispatch to maintain a regular flow of information regarding flight requirements, schedules and duty time limitations;
• maintaining knowledge and currency of aircraft operating systems, modern avionics, weather and regulations;
• ensuring all mandatory publications are updated and all relevant changes are reviewed, clearly understood and followed;
• spending extended periods of time away from home base, occasionally at remote locations;
• assisting maintenance in positioning aircraft in preparation for, and after, flights;
• assisting aircraft maintenance engineers with aircraft servicing. (I.e. fuel, oil, grooming, towing etc.);
• when required, may be assigned to operate additional types of single- or multi- engine aircraft;
• assisting the Safety Officers and the Safety Committee to ensure safe operations;
• ensuring a positive and professional customer service attitude is maintained;
• assisting clients in planning their flight requirements;
• ensuring all federal regulatory and ministry, administrative, financial, and operational documentation is completed accurately without delay.

Managers have the right to assign additional duties.

The incumbent shall, while in the workplace, conduct themselves in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any workplace practices as directed by their immediate supervisor. The incumbent shall report any hazards of which they are aware to their immediate supervisor.

Staffing and Licencing :

Canadian Airline Transport Pilot License for fixed wing aircraft
Valid Instrument Rating (Group 1)
Valid Category 1 Medical
Single- and multi-engine land and sea endorsement
Restricted Radio Telephone Operators Certificate
Ability to pass Canadian and U.S. Transport Agency Security Screening
Possession of a valid Passport or ability to acquire

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of the Aeronautics Act, Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR's),the Commercial Air Service Standard, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Ministry air operations in order to support the Pilot-In-Command during flight operations and to safely operate the CL 415 aircraft according to international, federal and provincial regulations, e.g. Transport Canada.

Job requires knowledge of float, water-bombing and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) transport flight operations which will provide the incumbent with the ability to operate the CL 415 to the level required for the position.

Job requires the following minimum flight experience:
• Must have accumulated a minimum of 2000 hours flight time of which 1000 hours shall be float experience as Pilot-In-Command (PIC)

Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Skills :

Job requires communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with Nav-Canada, Flight Service, fire and air service staff along with a wide variety of client groups, using tact and diplomacy while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive matters.

Job requires judgement skills in order to apply sound pilot decisions, e.g. assisting the Captain in ensuring that a safe and efficient environment is maintained for both crew and aircraft.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working within established regulatory practices and procedural controls, Ministry and Government policies, legislation, guidelines and directives, Aeronautics Act and Transport Canada regulations when making decisions on project level procedures such as aerial fire fighting on initial attack and sustained water-bombing operations on behalf of the Ontario government.

Job requires providing updates to manager as required. Job requires that situations outside established policies and procedures, are referred to the Senior Pilot and in his / her absence the Chief Pilot, e.g. dealing effectively with problem or unsafe situations especially related to flight safety or required changes to existing applicable flight operations procedures.

Job requires maintaining piloting skills and knowledge as they are reviewed on a regular basis for regulatory compliance and proficiency with results maintained by the supervisor.
