Purpose of Position :

To provide expertise in the development and use of data sets for assessing and evaluating Ontario's goal of sustainable forest management.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1.Coordinates the research, analysis and maintenance of information to be used in reporting the evaluation of provincial forest sustainability by:
- gathering, compiling, assessing, maintaining and analyzing provincial forest related social-economic and other data sets
- maintaining and reporting on provincial forest social-economic and other data analysis;
- developing, querying and reporting routines;
- assisting in the quantification of social/economic demands for forest use through report and statistical analysis;
- assisting in development of reports on Ontario's forests
- training field staff and industry partners on data compilation, analysis and submission standards.

2. Develops , enhances, maintains and reports on databases used for evaluating forest sustainability by:
- creating reporting routines for easy analysis of data;
- developing mechanisms for transforming database information into formats compatible with analysis tools and models;
- performing quantitative analysis of timber supply data;
- aggregating regional social-economic monitoring results and forest resources assessment and timber supply data for analysis and modeling
- updating all non-resource based databases and identifying information to support the development of new forest and economic development policy;

3. Conducts performance achievement and trend analysis using advanced socio-economic impact models to determine if the sustainable
economic development goals are being met by:
- leading the modeling, forecasting and analysis at regional and provincial levels;
- performing macro level analysis and assessment of forest use impacts
- undertaking economic assessments of sustainable forestry using econometric models, spatial and other analytical techniques;
- developing forecasts of investment level required to support economic activity options.

4. Advises model developers of the need for new forest models to aid in economic development sustainability assessment by:
- pointing out model objectives, the desired characteristics;
- evaluating the results of Ministry application in the evaluation of sustainable development by assessing application results
- working to develop solutions to model use issues, promoting solutions, and recommending revisions to model developers.

Knowledge :

- working knowledge of forest policies, guidelines, standards, methods, practices and techniques of forest economic assessment
- Knowledge of provincial socio-economic data sets, data modeling and database development methodology and advanced modeling systems
- proven knowledge of current computer systems technology including G.I.S., system analysis techniques, hardware and software
- excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, oral/written communication , problem solving and reasoning skills
- good project management skills
