Make a difference and explore this challenging opportunity with the Ministry of Correctional Services in the role of Mental Health Nurse working with mentally disordered offenders.

You will provide general and psychiatric nursing care to assigned offenders for the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre and support decreasing the utilization of correctional beds by the mentally disordered offender by developing and implementing in-facility treatment plans; and by accessing community mental health services for these clients. You will also provide mental health care to clients, including: assessing clients for mental illness; developing/implementing facility management and discharge plans; developing and maintaining tracking systems; identifying and accessing community mental health resources; acting as a client advocate. You will administer long-acting psychotropic medications; provide individual counselling; coordinate psychiatry clinics for consultation and ongoing care; establish links with area psychiatric facilities, Canadian Mental Health Association, mental health court diversion workers; participate on internal committees, as required; provide emergency first-aid; and maintain factual health-care records.

Qualifications:Current College of Nurses of Ontario registration as a registered nurse; knowledge of mental illness and current treatment modalities, acquired through enrolment in/completion of post-diploma/post-degree certificate program in mental health, supplemented by continuing education in mental health/psychiatry; well developed clinical skills in working with the mentally ill; excellent mental health status assessment skills; experience working in a multidisciplinary team; demonstrated client advocacy skills; change management skills to adapt to policy/practice amendments; conflict management, interpersonal and communication skills.
