Use your knowledge of Aboriginal affairs in Ontario, your strength in project coordination along with your superior research skills in this role where you will primarily support the team responsible for the authorization of mineral exploration permits under the revised Mining Act, 2009 and the Duty to Consult obligations.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Working in a team environment, you will:

• develop, conduct and maintain research plans on subject matters such as but not limited to consultation practices within Ontario ministries and other Canadian jurisdictions, the history, application and practice of Aboriginal and treaty rights in Canada
• research data and issues on treaties, rights, cultural values in order to manage and support an up-to-date database of research and data
• provide advice, information and operational support to senior management and staff as it relates to mineral development and the regulatory framework within the Mining Act
• assist senior management in resolving issues arising from consultation and interpretation of Aboriginal and/or treaty rights
• develop and maintain the ministry's Aboriginal awareness and education intranet portal
• identify appropriate content to be in included in the ministry's Aboriginal awareness training and education programming
• establish and maintain a network of staff relationships and contacts in conjunction with ministry research and advisory needs

Specialized knowledge:

• You have knowledge of the scope and history of Aboriginal and treaty rights in Canada and the history and significance of Ontario treaties, in particular to Ontario's mineral development sector and climate.
• You have knowledge of the legal aspects of the Crown's duty to consult, consultation processes and their application to Ontario's mineral development sector.
• You have knowledge of First Nation/Métis issues and governance structures, provincial-territorial organization, land claims, and cultural values.
• You have an understanding of government and an awareness of the government's decision-making process.
• You are able to interpret and apply knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory regimes, resource development practices and policies that applies to the Ontario mineral development sector.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills to develop trust and positive working relationships with senior management and staff at all levels.
• You have proven communication skills to lead consultation and provide expert, strategic advice, training and support to senior management.
• You have demonstrated communication and audio-visual skills to review, write and edit submissions (i.e. correspondence, speaking notes, and other communications).

Other essential skills:

• You have demonstrated experience applying your knowledge of research methodologies and analysis techniques when conducting analytical studies.
• You have strong issues management skills to identify, assess, and analyze complex or sensitive issues and develop and recommend effective solutions.
• You have project planning, coordination and organizational skills tomanage and coordinate a range of complex research projects within limited timeframes.
• You can demonstrate sensitivity to issues and decisions affecting Aboriginal communities involving treaty rights.
