What can I expect to do in this role?

Duties Will Include: As counsel, you would participate in the delivery of legal and legal policy services that reflect the Division's responsibilities within the justice system by providing thorough legal analysis and strategic legal advice. You would be responsible for legal and operational policy development and implementation processes, including: legal research; the development of legislation; the provision of legal/strategic OPS policy analysis & advice; the preparation of briefing and Cabinet materials & correspondence; the assessment of the operational impacts of legal and policy changes; the assessment of legal implications of operational and policy issues; and the development & implementation of proposals for changes in policy. You would work under the supervision of or with a team of counsel and policy analysts. The capacity and interest to work collaboratively with policy and legal professionals across the government, and with the judiciary, justice partners and external stakeholders, is essential.

Membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada

Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of the structures of the justice system, the unique roles of the Court Services Division, the Attorney General, the judiciary and the bar; knowledge of the Canadian Constitution, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Statutes of Ontario and common legal precepts. Experience in litigation. Superior legal, policy, analytical, research & communications skills; ability to effectively translate legal and public policy concepts into Cabinet documents, and to visualize those concepts in legislation; familiarity with the legal policy process, government decision making processes and legislative/regulatory process; experience in developing research materials, options papers, briefing/presentation materials; experience in providing strategic advice for consideration by senior officials; sound understanding of the government's justice policy agenda; experience in co-ordinating the preparation/approval of complex work products; strong project management skills; strong aptitude and desire to work in a team environment; strong problem-solving and relationship building skills; ability to use computer software packages (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Quicklaw).
