What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description:

The Exceptional Access Program Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care has a number of summer opportunities for students with a background in clinical pharmacy. The Exceptional Access Program (EAP) facilitates patient access in exceptional circumstances to drugs not funded on the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Formulary, or where no listed alternative is available.

You will be working closely with a dynamic and dedicated team of pharmacists, technicians, and support staff to assist in the processing, assessment, and review of drug funding submissions from across the province. Some of the responsibilities of this role may include (but are not limited to);
• Data interpretation, classification, verification, and information processing of clinical submissions
• Assist the EAP team with the assessment of requests for the funding of non-formulary drugs based on clinical information provided and established criteria
• Respond to inquiries from physician offices and other health professionals through verbal or written communication
• Respond to and process calls from physicians and/or their delegates on EAP's Telephone Request Service (TRS)
• Students that have completed their third year of university in a recognized pharmacy program are preferred
• Work may require experience specified/listed in the questions below or other similar tasks as assigned.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory
All positions require students to be 15 years of age on the first day of employment with no age limit.

Some positions require students to be 15-24 years of age (or 15-29 years of age if you are a person with a disability) on the first day of employment due to program funding.

Some positions on this job ad will require the successful candidate to undergo a general-level screening check, which includes a criminal record check, at their own expense.

We are looking for individuals with a background in clinical pharmacy who are detail-oriented and work well in a collaborative, team environment. The ideal candidate should possess;

Communications and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, document findings, record data, presentations meeting minutes etc.)
• You apply your verbal, written, listening communication skills and customer service skills to respond to phone, email and in-person inquiries and provide information to internal clients and/or public

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You apply your experience using Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), databases; email and internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents;
• You apply your knowledge and/or experience in writing, editing and proofreading various communication documents
• A working knowledge of internet resources for drug information

Other requirements
• Excellent organizational and time management skills;
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines
• Ability to meet timelines and work effectively within a fast paced environment
• Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Candidate is a Pharmacy Student who is eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and is familiar with Ontario/Canadian Pharmacy regulations
