Are you interested in building your geological mapping skills and contributing to an organization that provides opportunities for personal growth, continuous learning and work-life balance? If so, then consider an internship with our team at the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS). This position will focus on Quaternary surficial mapping.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As part of the technical geoscience mapping team in the Ontario Geological Survey, you will:

• provide regional descriptions and interpretations of Ontario's Quaternary deposits
• plan, design and conduct an independent 2D and 3D Quaternary mapping project
• collect geoscience data, prepare maps, reports and public presentations
• direct and lead the work of field crews
• contribute to the sustainable development of Ontario's earth and mineral resources
• learn the skills needed to successfully lead and complete a field mapping project.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must be a registered geoscientist or geoscientist-in-training with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) or with another regulated association of geoscientists.
• You must be able to travel to sites throughout Ontario to complete field work for extended periods of time.
• You must have the ability to operate road and water vehicles, such as 4-wheel drive trucks, ATVs, boats, and canoes.
• You must be able to orienteer, navigate and camp in remote areas.
• You must have graduated from a university of recognized standing within the past three years.

Specialized knowledge

• You have knowledge of Quaternary geoscience and relevant disciplines of geoscience that are applicable to the study of Quaternary deposits.
• You have knowledge of regional surficial mapping techniques and practices to make primary field-based geological observations.
• You have the ability to develop new interpretations and hypotheses by compiling, synthesizing and integrating geoscience datasets.
• You are skilled in using GPS technology and interpreting digital imagery for map construction and to ensure accurate location of field observations and safe travel during field operations.

Communication, interpersonal and people skills

• You have proven interpersonal and team leadership skills.
• You have good communication skills and demonstrated experience delivering geoscience information to a variety of audiences.

Other important skills

• You have planning, organizational and problem-solving skills to develop, implement and complete geoscience projects within guidelines and timeframes.
• You have experience with applicable computer software and hardware for geoscience applications as well as database, spreadsheet and word processing software.
• You have knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and any potential or actual hazards to health and safety that apply to the workplace to ensure compliance and safety when leading field crews.
