Are you interested in supporting geoscience mapping projects and geologic map making, while working collaboratively in a dynamic technical work environment with a highly motivated team of professionals? If so, consider this exciting opportunity where you will provide technical support and services to geoscience mapping projects with the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:
• facilitate the construction and production of hardcopy and digital geoscience products
• conduct pre-publication processing and quality assurance and quality control of digital geologic map products
• assist in the organization of completed project materials
• maintain an inventory of microscopes, temporary rock sample storage, assist in the preparation of rock samples for geochemical analysis, and assist with equipment preparations for fieldwork
• manipulate geoscience data to construct specific summary data-sets for geoscience products
• obtain and prepare digital base maps and digital imagery for geoscience mapping projects

How do I qualify?

Specialized knowledge:

• knowledge of cartographic and geographic (spatial geometry) principles
• knowledge of geologic technical terms and descriptions, symbology and patterns for construction of geologic maps and related graphics
• knowledge and understanding of digital topographic base maps, projections, co-ordinate systems and methods to effectively modify and edit base maps for use in geologic maps

Technical knowledge:

• knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) software to construct geoscience maps, and compile geoscience datasets in a structured digital environment
• knowledge of standard and specialized graphics software to construct various graphics and integration of images
• working knowledge of data management and manipulation, spreadsheet and word processing software
• knowledge or familiarity with microscopes used by geoscientists; rock saws and rock-cutting techniques; use of scissor lifts and working at heights and the ability to lift and move heavy objects such as rock pails and storage containers

Analytical, research and problem-solving skills:

• analytical and research skills to solve GIS-based problems related to map construction
• problem solving skills to select the best solution for performing non-standard GIS technical tasks, for example, to integrate GIS technology in geologic map construction and to ensure compliance with cartographic map standards
• ability to assess and evaluate new software packages and their applicability to map making procedures

Communication, interpersonal and people skills:

• communication skills to understand instructions, ask questions for clarification and clearly convey detailed information and instructions
• proven interpersonal and team work skills to interact and collaborate effectively with professional staff

Organizational skills:

• time and workload management skills to deal with overlapping project timelines and tight timelines for completion of deliverables
• ability to organize digital data, project materials, rock samples and rock thin sections

Other important skill:

• knowledge of health and safety regulations and any potential or actual danger to health and safety that apply to the workplace to ensure compliance and safety
