The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), Provincial Services Division seeks motivated leaders to continue to oversee the province's natural resources and work to safeguard Ontario's provincial parks, forests, fisheries, wildlife, mineral aggregates, Crown lands and waters, as well as continuing to advise on policies that assist with protecting and promoting sustainable use of Ontario's environment, ecosystems and resources which aligns with the objectives and commitments of government and the ministry.

There are three opportunities available in the Provincial Services Division, within the Science and Research Branch:

• Manager, Wildlife Research and Monitoring Section (Location: Peterborough)
• Manager, Centre for Northern Forest Ecosystem Research Section (Location: Thunder Bay)
• Manager, Aquatic Research and Monitoring Section (Location: Peterborough)

The Science and Research Branch is responsible for providing science as a service to MNRF. This is done by leading, coordinating, and delivering MNRF's applied research and provincial inventory, monitoring and reporting. The branch is composed of approximately 250 full time staff in locations across the province who are dedicated to producing sound science to inform MNRF resource management policy and decision making.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As the Manager, Wildlife Research and Monitoring Section, you will:
• Provide strategic leadership and management for the development and delivery of a scientific research agenda and related plans and priorities for the coordination of wildlife scientific research across the province to sustain wildlife populations and their habitats.
• Lead and manage the design, development, implementation and ongoing delivery of long-term research and monitoring programs including the Provincial Wildlife Monitoring Program to determine and assess the effects and the effectiveness of ministry wildlife resource management and protection policies and programs.
• Lead the unit's key role in the scientific research and monitoring of such ministry priority areas as waterfowl /wetlands, Far North diversity, climate change, Caribou Conservation Plan support, species at risk, landscape ecology and wildlife disease control including rabies.
• Lead the development, establishment and ongoing management of ministry collaboration, partnership relationships, consultations and transfer of knowledge initiatives regarding wildlife management scientific program direction with internal and external stakeholders.

As the Manager, Centre for Northern Forest Ecosystem Research Section, you will:
• Provide strategic leadership and management for the development and delivery of a scientific agenda and related plans and priorities for an applied research centre.
• Lead and manages the design, development, implementation and ongoing delivery of long-term research and monitoring programs to determine and assess the effects and the effectiveness of resource management policies including northern mammal ecology (moose, woodland caribou, elk); stand ecology (forest biomass, forest sustainability), boreal silviculture (forest renewal), human dimensions (angler/hunter surveys, remote tourism), comparative aquatic effective (river/stream management), and spatial ecology (landscape-scale biodiversity and habitat conservation).
• Lead the development, establishment and ongoing management of ministry collaboration, partnership relationships, consultations and transfer of knowledge initiatives regarding forest ecosystem and Far North resource management scientific program direction and broaden the engagement of all partners in policy/program development and implementation.

As the Manager, Aquatic Research and Monitoring Section, you will:
• Provide strategic leadership and management for the development and delivery of a scientific research agenda and related plans and priorities for the coordination of aquatic scientific research across the province.
• Lead and manage the design, development, implementation and ongoing delivery of long-term research and monitoring programs for such ministry priority areas as Great Lakes ecosystem, food web, native species, invasive species, aquatic species at risk and climate change research; inland lakes, rivers and streams research including environmental flows, water balance, watershed classification, monitoring design and methods and indicators; and biodiversity conservation research.
• Lead the development, establishment and ongoing management of ministry collaboration, partnership relationships, consultations and transfer of knowledge initiatives regarding fisheries management scientific program direction to strategically promote the government's fisheries management science policy objectives, and broaden the engagement of all partners in policy/program development and implementation.

Relationship Management and Communication Skills

• You have demonstrated effective communication skills in working with technical and non-technical stakeholders and clients.
• You have demonstrated political acuity and the ability to anticipate, analyze, evaluate and respond to complex, sensitive and high profile strategic issues which may have impact on the ministry mandate.
• You have the demonstrated experience collaborating with key science related partners, such as universities, to deliver on various science and research initiatives.
• You use effective negotiation and conflict management skills to build credibility with diverse colleagues, stakeholders and senior leaders.

Knowledge

• You have general knowledge and understanding of research and science theories and methods and data collection activities.
• You have an understanding of a diverse range of science and research topics as it relates to the ministry and that meets the needs of key ministry priorities.
• You understand current government directions, priorities and economic development initiatives relating to the Natural Resources and Forestry agenda.
