The division is a leader in highway design, research and construction and works in collaboration with stakeholders, agencies, and partners across government and the transportation sector through out the province to deliver cost-effective mobility focussed infrastructure projects using sound engineering principles. as the Director you will be able to leverage the latest technology in delivering on the branch's programs.

The Ministry of Transportation is looking for a Director of Design and Engineering to oversee the design and engineering program through project delivery teams and subject matter expertise in various areas of engineering, geomatics and property functions that support project planning, design and delivery. This Director will lead a large geographically dispersed, high-performing team to work collaboratively with external partners, other levels of government and internal partners across the ministry to successfully provide client focused services. As a member of the ministry's senior leadership team, this Director will be accountable for upholding a diverse, inclusive, accessible and respectful workplace where every employee has a voice and the opportunity to fully contribute.

Leveraging your background in leading people and developing talent, modernizing and transforming business lines, you will ensure the continuous improvement of service and program delivery to meet changing business and client needs and implementation of new technologies.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Engineer, Transportation Infrastructure Management Division, the Director, Design and Engineering will:

• Lead, support and create a climate in which enables staff to do their best while fostering strong morale and principles of diversity and inclusion
• Lead the development and implementation of the design and engineering program that ensures efficient performance of provincial highway and related infrastructure
• Provide technical, operational, and strategic direction for the development of an integrated approach to the ministry's design and engineering program development and delivery
• Build and foster relationships with key stakeholders, including but not limited to other ministries, jurisdictions, Infrastructure Ontario, and Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - Ontario
• Lead negotiations on key issues pertaining to design and engineering for the province
• Direct development of strategies, policies, procedures, and guidelines to support the design and engineering program as well as address government priorities and directions
• Manage the branches resources including, equipment, finances, and human resources
• Provide senior level expertise and advice to the Minister, Deputy Minister and Senior Leadership Team on a broad range of policies, programs and issues related to design and engineering
• Direct transformation and change management projects that build organizational capacity

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are licenced by the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)

• You have demonstrated experience in leading and affecting change
• You can develop and implement the modernization of existing IT systems

Relationship Management and Political Acuity

• You have a proven track record of fostering collaborative relationships with internal and external partners and communicating and influencing across a broad spectrum of organizations
• You have a collaborative leadership style, and recognize the value of working horizontally with internal and external stakeholders with diverse perspectives
• You have a high degree of integrity and demonstrated experience communicating complex and sensitive information to senior leaders/stakeholders, and can recognize politically sensitive issues and their potential implications in an organization with high public profile and scrutiny

Job Knowledge

• You can provide expert technical advice and engineering expertise related to asset management, planning and programing, engineering, construction, operations, maintenance and policies, standards, and specifications for highway infrastructure
• You are able to lead and direct, both technically and strategical, all design and engineering programs associated with transportation infrastructure management
