The Director, Nursing and Health Professions is a new and impactful role in the Ministry of Health, for a seasoned leader to provide strategic advice and nursing expertise to the Chief of Nursing and Professional Practice and Assistant Deputy Minister, on a wide range of provincial health policy and program specific issues relevant to nursing.

The new Director will have the unique opportunity to spearhead innovation in nursing workforce initiatives, build strong partnerships with nursing groups, leaders, committees and associations in order to develop strategies related to proactive workforce planning, recruitment and retention of nurses across health sectors.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting to the Chief of Nursing and Professional Practice and Assistant Deputy Minister, you will:
• Provide nursing expertise and strategic advice on health and nursing resource policy.
• Direct the Branch in monitoring, analyzing and assessing a broad range of nursing issues, trends and directions in order to establish nursing policy.
• Activate a robust internal and external stakeholder approach, inclusive of patients, caregivers and point of care professionals.
• Ensure alignment between other divisions within the Ministry of Health and other relevant Ministries, as well as external stakeholder groups.
• Lead the development of innovative strategies, policies and programs related to the retention and recruitment of nurses across all sectors, ensuring clear return on investment of these initiatives.
• Provide financial and human resources leadership to the Branch.

• You have experience as an executive in a large, complex organizational environment, leading teams of managers and professional staff to deliver results.
• You have developed, managed, and implemented large-scale and multi-faceted strategies that are comprehensive and effective in accomplishing a specific organizational goal.
• You are proven to be an innovative leader, with a background in transformation, who can plan strategically and communicate a vision to your team.
• You are an inclusive executive and have successfully fostered a respectful and engaging work environment.

Relationship and Issues Management

• You have proven credibility within the nursing community and with key health sector stakeholders.
• You have collaborated and worked fairly, openly, and constructively with partners in the health care industry, to build consensus on contentious issues.
• You are able to effectively assess the needs and interests of internal and external stakeholders and use this knowledge to determine the most effective techniques for building and maintaining stakeholder relationships.
• You have a strong sense of political acuity and can anticipate and respond to sensitive situations.

Technical Expertise

• You are a current member in good standing and Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario and possess a Masters degree as per legislative requirements.
• You have extensive knowledge of the nursing field and an understanding of the critical issues and concerns faced by nursing professionals.
• You have in-depth knowledge of health care services, populations, trends, models of service delivery and funding.
• You can apply your knowledge and experience to facilitate the implementation of inter-professional collaborative care models of health care delivery.
• You have experience with human resources management policies, practices, procedures and collective agreements to effectively manage staff.
