The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines advocates on behalf of Ontario's northern region, as well as on behalf of the province's minerals industry. The Ministry delivers government programs and services in northern Ontario and represents the interests of their partners and stakeholders at Queen's Park.

As the Director of the Communications Branch you will promote the economic opportunities and potential of the resource sectors in northern Ontario by directing the planning and delivery of communications activities.

Primary clients are the Minister's Office, Cabinet Office and ministry divisions. Externally, the branch's principal clients are northern media, specialty mining and forestry media, northern, mining and forestry stakeholders, Aboriginal communities, as well as the general public of northern Ontario across the province with respect to mining and forestry matters.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting directly to the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines and the Deputy Minister of Cabinet Office Communications, your core responsibilities will be to:

• Effectively lead a team of communications professionals.
• Direct the development and implementation of integrated strategic plans for key files including significant resource development transformation.
• Establish strong working relationships with ministry policy counterparts and liaise with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, to ensure communications is aligned with policy and program development.
• Develop collaborative relationships across government, agencies and stakeholders.
• Promote a positive team environment, a culture of service excellence, and an inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible work place.

Your extensive experience as a strategic leader will position you well to influence and advise senior executives and officials on sensitive issues.

How do I qualify?

Senior Leadership

• You have executive leadership experience in building and leading teams, mentoring staff and delivering results in a high performing environment.
• You have demonstrated your ability to plan strategically and you have
experience implementing change and transforming the way business is
delivered.
• You have strong judgment and are able to determine when sensitive
issues and tasks require delegation or your direct involvement.
• You have experience leading briefings to senior officials.

Communications

• You have experience in strategic communications, issues management, integrated marketing and digital communications.
• You are a politically astute, seasoned professional with outstanding
judgment and proven ability to clearly anticipate and assess issues and make recommendations for communications.
• You have demonstrated experience successfully managing highly contentious files.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management

• You have strong interpersonal skills and have the proven ability to manage complex relationships and maintain key contacts at all levels of government, agencies and other organizations.
• You have the ability to work collaboratively both within your ministry and across the OPS to deliver innovative, large scale initiatives.
