The Ministry of Education, Provincial Schools Branch, Milton Campus (Ernest C. What can I expect to do in this role?

• Coordinate and supervise meal preparation, with the assistance of Cooks and Food Service Helpers for students, staff, volunteers and guests in a day/residential setting;
• Supervise and instruct cooks and food services helpers in general cooking, baking techniques, observing their food preparation and demonstrating techniques;
• Adhere to established work schedules, menus and position controls in the preparation of meals; enduring adherence to appropriate standards and practices of food preparation and storage, ensuring security and proper sanitation of kitchen equipment and facility are maintained;
• Ensuring meals and snacks are in accordance with the Canadian Food Guide and Eat Smart guidelines;
• Ordering/purchasing supplied and equipment; assist in receipt and storage or replacement supplies, adhering to standard stock rotation principles;
• Analyze and problem-solve various issues, such as equipment malfunctions, workplace hazards, supply shortages, security and hygiene control;
• Assists the Food Services Manager in the overall food service operation.

How do I qualify?

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Thorough knowledge of cooking/baking methods and procedures, and standards associated with food preparation, storage, sanitation and safety, and the ability to adhere to those standards;
• Ability to acquire knowledge related to Food Service manuals, ministry regulations and related legislation;
• Experience operating commercial/institutional food preparation equipment;
• Acceptable, responsible experience in volume cooking, preferably in a large volume food environment;
• Knowledge of food safety practices acquired through recognized training programs, such as Servsafe and National Sanitation Training Program;
• Ability to work shifts and perform physical work.

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

• Oral communication skills, tact and diplomacy to orient, instruct subordinate cooks and food service helpers and to communicate with others such as service providers;
• Written communication skills to prepare reports, document equipment problems, log entries, etc;
• Basic computer skills to use necessary computer systems within the facility as required;

ORGANIZATIONAL, ANALYTICAL AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS:

• Ability to organize/coordinate kitchen tasks, including the work of others;
• Analytical and problem solving skills to identify/recognize potential problems such as malfunctioning equipment, workplace hazards, food shortages and security issues, and to manage/report, as appropriate.
