Before I joined the OPS, I … was a Health Club Manager for some of Toronto’s best hotels. While at school, I studied Phys-Ed and Psychology.

I began my career in… the OPS in 1993 working at the Ontario Correctional Institute as a casual correctional officer. I then transferred to Mimico Correctional Complex, where I was given numerous acting opportunities. I then applied and became a Phase 2 Youth Worker at Toronto Youth Assessment Centre, then moved on to Metro West Detention Centre, where I received my acting manager training.

And now I am … the Operational Manager at the Toronto Jail.

A day in my shoes… usually begins at 4:30 am, for my 5:00am-5:00pm shift. I prepare for the morning muster, which starts by reviewing occurrence reports and insuring the roster meets the jail's needs. The morning continues with attendance at a Superintendent's meeting where I brief the senior administration on my reviews including daily counts, the incidents from the previous day, transfers, hospital runs and staffing. Throughout the day, I am responsible for managing and responding to any emergencies that may arise and to ensure the safety of the staff and inmates of the jail. Supervising the floor staff and maintaining good counts are also part of my other duties. I then inform the Region and Information Management Unit with updates and clarification regarding the day's events. I may also be required to attend court to provide evidence.

I have chosen to work for the public service because… the stability after coming from a career that was adversely affected by recession.

The thing that has surprised me the most about working for the OPS is… that everyone has an opportunity for advancement.

Outside of work, my most memorable achievement is/was... watching, learning and being a part of my children’s lives.
