1) What attracted you to the Ontario Public Service (OPS)?
I was interested in joining the OPS because of my interest in the Ontario
Internship Program (OIP). I perceived the program as an opportunity to build on
my knowledge and experience gained through other jobs. So far, both the OPS
& OIP have proven to be an excellent means to develop my skills because of
the diversity in roles, types of work and daily challenges.
2) Describe a typical day at work.
Fortunately, everyday at work is different for me! Some of the main projects
that I work on include writing text for promotional materials and publications,
researching information for our publications – including the annual Ontario
Parks guide, web blog articles, park brochures, assisting with developing
communications materials – news releases, background information, event plans
and special event planning and liaising with park staff to plan their events
3) What are you most proud of from your public service experience?
It is rewarding to see the final products that I have contributed to. For
example, planning a successful event or seeing materials with my writing and
ideas being used. It’s great to be a part of a creative team that encourages
fresh ideas and new perspectives.
4) What has surprised you the most about working for the OPS?
I’m surprised of how much I’ve learned about the indirect aspects of my work.
Through the many opportunities that I have been able to attend professional
development meetings, act on various team projects and work with colleagues in
diverse roles, I have learned more than just communications and marketing
strategies. I am familiar with a broad scope of government initiatives,
ministries and jobs and how they all fit together.
5) What advice do you have for a young professional who may be considering
a career in the OPS?
Be prepared to be challenged, but also, seek opportunities that enable you to
be challenged. I am fortunate to work with a great team and manager, who
encourage me to initiate new projects and speak up when needed. You can make
the most of learning experiences, because both formal and informal learning
opportunities are endless around here. Talk to people – explore what you like
and then, what you would like even more!
