1) What attracted you to the Ontario Public Service (OPS)?
I was attracted to work for the OPS because of the possibility to grow and
expand my horizons within a huge organization of over 65,000 employees. The OPS
also provides a whole bunch of learning and developmental opportunities and
this was also an attraction.
2) Describe a typical day at work.
No such thing as a typical day! I could be working with the Traffic Section
administering a contract and overseeing construction or working with
consultants to plan and design a highway rehabilitation project or working on
province wide implementation new software. There are so many projects to get
involved in!
3) What are you most proud of from your public service experience?
I was proud of being involved in an important project not long after I started
my position. I was given the responsibility to produce an important position
report about regional maintenance, Rout and Seal. After my research was
complete I presented my recommendations to our senior managers.
4) What has surprised you the most about working for the OPS?
There are a lots of things that surprise me while working for the OPS. There
are tons of opportunity to grow and build my skill sets, there is freedom to
move within the organization, and the OPS has given me to chance to learn and
work with experienced and knowledgeable people.
5) What advice do you have for a young professional who may be considering
a career in the OPS?
I suggest to do your research and develop a career plan first since there are
many career options in the OPS. Take advantage of training and learning
programs available once you get in the OPS. There’s certainly flexibility and
exposure to more than one job here. Consider the whole province – opportunity
may be a short move away!
