Ontario government ministries and agencies provide a wide range of interesting summer jobs for students throughout Ontario through Regular Summer Student Hiring. This is one of many opportunities for youth/students to gain valuable work experience. Additional opportunities are available on the Youth and New Professionals portal of OPS Careers.

Are you eligible?

You are eligible to apply if you are:

  • a student in secondary school, college, or university
  • eligible to work in Canada

What kinds of jobs are available?

Individual ministries post summer positions in a variety of different fields. Refer to the Regular Summer Student posting page for information on specific opportunities currently available or to submit your resume to our Student Resume Bank.

What is the length of the positions?

Jobs range from 6 to 16 weeks in duration.

What is the pay rate?

Student wage rates for 2009 are as follows:


 Level 1

$9.50 / hour

 Level 2

$11.10 / hour

Level 1 jobs reflect work that is routine and limited in complexity. They do not require a special skill level.

Level 2 jobs involve work that is more varied and complex in nature. These jobs typically require knowledge from a related area of study.

There are two ways to apply for Regular Summer Student positions:

1. Submit your resume to the Student Resume Bank

Students can submit their resume to the Student Resume Bank; opportunities are sorted by Region. During the upload process applicants will be required to specify their preferred city/town and ministries for which they may be considered.

2. Apply directly to posted positions

Q. How can I apply?

Q. Do I have to submit separate resumes for each region and/or apply to positions separately?

A. Yes. You have to submit separate resumes for each region posted on the Student Resume Bank. You will also have to apply separately for each posted position. Return to Top

Q. Are bilingual positions available?

A. Bilingual positions will be posted in both French and English and have bilingual in the title on the job search page. Return to Top

Q. When I submit my resume to the Student Resume Bank, can I specify which city/town I am interested in working?

A. Yes. You can specify your preferred city/town when submitting your resume. Your resume will be reviewed for opportunities listed in the region you have specified. If you want to be considered for several regions, you must submit a separate resume for each region. Return to Top

Q. Do I need to specify a ministry when I submit my resume to the Student Resume Bank?

A. No. If you select a ministry of preference, your resume will only be forwarded to positions in that ministry. To be considered for any ministry, you do not need to select a ministry. Return to Top

Q. What are the eligibility criteria for the Ontario Government Regular Summer Student Hiring? Is there an age limit for participation?

A. You are eligible to apply if you are a student in secondary school, college or university and eligible to work in Canada. There is no age requirement. Return to Top

Q. In addition to Regular Summer Student hires, are there other opportunities for students?

A. Within the Ontario Public Service (OPS), there are a number of employment experiences available to a diverse array of recruits. Visit the Youth and New Professional portal on OPS Careers to learn more about these unique and exciting employment programs. The Summer Experience Program (SEP), for example, offers summer employment for Ontario youth aged 15-24 (up to 29 for persons with disabilities.) In 2009, this program will offer several thousand positions across the OPS, its related agencies and community groups. Q. What happens to my resume when it’s posted to the Summer Student Resume Bank?

A. Your resume will be available for hiring managers to review. Staff in our Regional Recruitment Centres will provide resumes to hiring managers based on location / region / ministry preferences specified at the time of application. The summer Student Resume Bank will be closed in early July and all resumes stored will be destroyed. Return to Top

Q. I am from out of province but I go to school in Ontario. Am I eligible for the Ontario Government Regular Summer Student Hiring?

A. Yes. You do not have to be a permanent Ontario resident to qualify for employment under the Ontario Government Regular Summer Student Hiring. Return to Top

Q. I am just finishing my final year at school -- am I still eligible for the Ontario Government Regular Summer Student Hiring?

A. Yes. You are eligible for a period of six months following the completion of the requirements for graduation from an educational institution. Return to Top

Q. Do I have to make my own living arrangements?

A. Yes. If you obtain a position that requires you to move, you are responsible for arranging your own living arrangements. Return to Top

Q. I haven't received any acknowledgment that my resume was received. How do I know that the organization(s) I've applied to have received my resume?

A. Only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted. Return to Top

Q. When do the jobs start?

A. Start dates vary per position. For example, some positions may need to be filled in time for the May long weekend (i.e., tourist attractions) while others may be more flexible in the starting date. Return to Top
