Purpose of Position :

As the lead of the Stewardship Youth Rangers (SYR) team, under the general supervision of the xx Supervisor, to provide group leadership to Stewardship Youth Rangers in accordance with the SYR Program Guidelines. To assist in researching and identifying learning opportunities, organizing and implementing Stewardship Youth Ranger Program activities.

Duties / Responsibilities :

• Provide supervision, motivation and guidance as the team lead for a working group of up to 10 Rangers; assigning and monitoring staff duties while identifying/addressing any potential hazards and ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and MNR policies/guidelines,
• Lead the development and implementation of the SYR project schedule, including Identifying, researching and coordinating educational opportunities that meet provincial standards (e.g. no more than 10 percent of a Ranger's time is to be spent on menial tasks).
• Ensure timely communication with Internal and external partners in coordinating projects, educational opportunities and SYR program events
• Assist with training Rangers, and researching and identifying professional development opportunities for Rangers, such as: on the job training, planned lectures, tours and providing additional educational resources as required
• Maintain SYR program equipment, to ensure compliance with Ontario Health and Safety standards.
• Assist with administrative matters such as completion of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment documentation, Ranger's HR documentation, written performance evaluations and a final year-end report on the SYR program for xx District or xx Park.
• Assist in promotion of SYR program by taking pictures of Rangers engaged in work.
• The incumbent shall work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations and any workplace practices as directed by the employer, The incumbent shall ensure that workers take precautions to protect the health and safety of themselves and others by complying with such acts, codes, policies, procedures or accepted workplace practices as may be appropriate. The Incumbent shall advise workers of actual and potential dangers In the workplace and the required precautions.

Class G Ontario Driver's License Pleasure Craft Operator's Card
Additional requirements may be imposed based upon Ministry operating policy and the SYR work program schedule

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of ministry and government related policies, directives, guidelines and legislation (e.g. WOHP, WHM1S, Stewardship Youth Ranger Manual, Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations) to ensure the health and safety of the Stewardship Youth Rangers and work site locations.
Job requires knowledge of principles of supervision of staff and ability to assist with administration for work/education programs for Stewardship Youth Rangers. Programs should focus on resource management subjects, as well as ensuring the effective development and timely delivery of work and educational projects.
Job requires knowledge and understanding of ecological sustainability principles and practices required to organize and conduct Stewardship Youth Ranger's work and learning activities. These activities support ministry core business activities such as fish and wildlife, endangered species, forestry, crown land management, water, parks and protected areas, non-renewable resources, and public safety.
Job requires knowledge of group dynamics and team building to create a productive and stimulating work environment for Stewardship Youth Rangers by assessing and identifying potential conflicts and developing and making recommendations to the team coordinator.
Job requires knowledge and understanding of personal computers/software including electronic mail and word processing to complete a final report of the summer, e-mail to organize projects, etc.
Job requires knowledge of resource management tools and equipment such as hand tools, vehicles, boats/motors, trailers etc. to instruct and train Stewardship Youth Rangers in the proper use of hand tools to complete work tasks in compliance with Health and Safety standards.
Job requires good working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and those regulations made under the act that apply to the workplace and the work being performed.

Skills :

Reasoning/Problem Solving:
Job requires analytical and problem solving skills to
• supervise Stewardship Youth Rangers
identify individual and group performance Issues, identifying root cause and providing options and recommendations.
• report occurrences and recommend corrective actions to the team coordinator, when appropriate
• adjust work/education plans in response to unexpected changes to work/education assignments (e.g. lack of resource equipment and staff; emergency evacuations).
Job requires analytical skills to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the Stewardship Youth Rangers and make recommendations to the team coordinator with regards to the summer project schedule.
Communication:
Job requires oral communication skills to deliver training to Stewardship Youth Rangers to ensure safe and effective field operations.
Job requires strong written communication skills to:
• write a year-end report for the Stewardship Youth Ranger Program
• assist with written SYR performance appraisals
• interpret and communicate technical/specialized information and terminology for Stewardship Youth Rangers for effective delivery of the project schedule.
Job requires interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with internal MNR staff, external partners and members of the public in order to coordinate the implementation and completion of stewardship projects and public outreach/education Initiatives.
Supervision of Employees:
Job requires identifying/addressing hazards while providing supervision, guidance and motivation to up to 10 Rangers .
Job requires recommending and advising the Supervisor on hiring of unclassified staff, staff relations issues, and Injury management.
Job requires providing training to Stewardship Youth Rangers; scheduling, appropriate assignment and monitoring of work.
Job requires using various means of communication and equipment I.e. verbal/non-verbal using radio's, cell phones, satellite phones, handwritten, in-person and electronically communicated materials.
Organization and Planning:
Job requires advanced organization and planning skills to ensure the timely development and effective delivery of the project schedule, and that SYR program requirements are met within assigned deadlines (le. SYR performance evaluations, Final Report, etc.)

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working within Ministry policies, guidelines and procedures related to the operation of the Stewardship Youth Ranger Program.
Job requires providing a diversified work and education program set out by the Team Coordinator.
Job requires independent problem solving skills when in the field to deal with (minor) unknown or unexpected circumstances as they arise and to seek additional guidance when unable to do so.
Job requires making decisions by delivering work projects equipment and tools, managing issues by consulting with the Team Coordinator: recommending changes to work and education activities for program development and delivery.
Job requires referring complicated problems and issues such as staff relations, financial matters and program operations to the Team Coordinator for resolution.
