Purpose of Position :

To provide building maintenance, repair and related services at the Ontario Science Centre (OSC).

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Performs a variety of general maintenance and repair services throughout the property including:
- Installing correct lighting of various forms, checking the condition of the fixture to ensure proper working order, informing CBRE and/or OSC electricians of lighting problems that require electrical repair;
- Changing lighting in a variety of awkward and difficult to reach areas using a variety of hand-held devices, ladders, scissor lift, fork-lift, adapting equipment or constructing special platforms to enable access , while ensuring appropriate safety precautions taken (heights can be up to 30 feet);
- Cleaning dusty/dirty light fixtures twice per year;
- Reinforcing and refinishing cemented areas where cracks or holes have developed (e.g. Patio area, entrance walks, parking lots) and building forms to correct specifications, mixing and pouring cement and top finishing to blend in with surrounding area;
- Erecting walls, using wood or metal studding, covering with drywall, finishing with compound, sanding, sealing and painting, using a variety of hand and power tools, following plans and/or blueprints;
- Grounds maintenance as and where directed;
- Installing or dismantling office partitions, assembling according to manufacturer's plans, using hand and power tools;
- Minor furniture repairs;
- Drilling out old cabinet /desk/door locks and installing new locks;
- Finishing off work or prepping for work to be completed by outside contractors, e.g. Painting, carpet removal or laying, trimming, tiling, etc.;
- Installing equipment for OSC concessionaires, as required;
- Repairing, removing or laying carpet in offices and public areas, including measuring, cutting and gluing as required;
- Repairing broken personal transport chairs, coat racks and strollers;
- Repairing walls (holes, cracks), damaged wallpaper, and repainting walls and floors;
- Performing minor carpentry, including repairing nature trail lookouts/fence, building and/or erecting cupboard shelves for office closets, etc.;
- Repairing steel link fences;
- Erecting and dismantling permanent or free standing partitions in public and staff areas;
- Replacing, repairing and maintaining parking lot control arms;
- Removing broken glass windows and doors and replacing with appropriate materials such as, Lexan and/or plexiglass;
- Estimating, measuring, cutting and laying floor tiles in a variety of areas;
- Installing new directional signs, e.g. road and fire route signs on walls, poles, booths, inside/outside the complex, including cementing posts to affix signs, drilling to attach signs to a variety of surfaces;
- Assisting outside contractors, ensuring they have appropriate equipment, supplies, access and storage space for materials;
- Providing moving services for furniture and file boxes;
- Hanging of objects in various areas;
- Performing cleaning duties as needed, e.g. cleaning ledges, glass lighting panels, brass, etc.

2. Provides assistance to the shipping/receiving, stores and mail room areas by:
- Sorting Centre mail;
- Counting and recording stock quantities during the annual Stores stock inventory
- Maintaining knowledge of postage metering equipment to affix appropriate postage, etc.;
- Assisting in the Stores area during peak periods or replacing staff as required, including, tending to the stock counter, receiving and delivering goods, assisting in inventory recording, etc.

3. Performs other related duties as required.

Staffing and Licensing :

Ability to obtain a Forklift license and Scissor Lift license

Knowledge :

Good basic knowledge of mechanics with demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude relating to general building and grounds maintenance
Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations that apply to the position's work
Knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace to ensure compliance and reporting hazards.
Working knowledge of a variety of hand and power tools, including: table saw, circular saw, sanders, routers, planer, etc.

Skills :

Ability to perform a wide variety of mechanically semi-skilled handyman duties, including, carpet and tile laying, dry walling, plastering and limited carpentry.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, simple plans, diagrams and blue prints.
Ability to communicate effectively with internal staff, external visitors, rental clients, and contractors.
Ability to set priorities and work on own with minimal supervision.
Ability to train and oversee the work of temporary labour in peak load situations.
Ability to drive and handle fork-lift and scissor lift, complete appropriate training, and obtain licenses.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working in accordance with procedures established in the Ontario Science Centre and government policies, procedures, guidelines, directives or established routines and practices. Situations not covered by established procedures are referred to the Lead Hand or the appropriate Manager for direction. Job requires performing a variety of general maintenance work under minimal supervision. Completed work is reviewed for completeness and quality. On a daily basis, acts under the general guidance and direction of the Lead Hand. Job requires providing routine updates to immediate supervisor and other staff as required.
