Purpose of Position :

To provide overall the security of the Centre complex and its installations and exhibits. To ensure the security and safety of the public visiting the OSC and OSC staff. To promote the image of the Centre and uphold the corporate mission and values to the visitors and encourage their use and enjoyment of the facilities while requiring them to observe restrictions and procedures for their protection and safety.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Carries out a variety of security patrols by performing duties such as: (25%)
- patrolling internal areas of the Centre for general security purposes, ie. all areas, outside doors, clock punching stations during night hours, etc.
- patrolling external areas as required, ie. security of cars or buses parked in restricted areas, intruders, visitors on grounds, etc.
- advising Visitor Admissions on regulating vehicle and pedestrian traffic, arranging removal of cars or buses, as required;
- patrolling all Centre facilities, observing for safety of visitors, disregard for restrictions, theft or damage of exhibits, horseplay by juveniles leading to accidents, misuse of washrooms, ie. alcohol or drug use;
- using good judgement to evaluate observed irregularities and incidents, taking immediate personal action to inform, remind, persuade visitors re: restrictions and safety rules, warning juveniles re: behaviour, calling for Supervisor(s) or other assistance by radio;
- providing first aid to staff including completing required incident/illness report forms.

NB: As required Protective Service Officers may escort or remove visitors from the Centre and apprehend them for handing over to regular Police. However, they are required to use tact and patience in dealing intelligently with irregularities and incidents, maintaining good public relationships and using authoritarianism as a last resort.

Takes charge of Security Central Control by performing duties such as: (25%)
- staffing the Central Control nerve centre(s) on an assigned shift
- operating close circuit TV network cameras and monitors, a control console and a video tape recorder (Cameras placed at inside and outside strategic points), computerized card access system and computerized fire alarm system;
- watching monitors, observing visitors, parking and staff activities, etc. for irregularities;
- directing Supervisor(s) and other Officers to trouble areas by radio or telephone, adjusting camera angles where required, recording incidents on video tape for subsequent playback;
- maintaining communications in fire, bomb threat and other emergencies; relaying instructions to visitors by PA, to staff by radio or telephone, eg. to clear areas or whole building; acting as main fire wardens and as Emergency Response Team members;
- taking and relaying reports from Officers investigating emergencies, relaying additional instructions;
- keeping a detailed log of incidents and emergencies reported to Central Control; writing detailed incident reports for incidents occurring on the OSC site;
- answering incoming telephone calls when switchboard is closed;
- maintaining confidentiality of information regarding incidents/accidents and related Protective Services operations.

Carries out other responsible functions by: (25%)
- taking charge of “C” Desk and lower and upper central areas; regulating the entrance and exit of staff, DPW, business visitors, contractors, etc.; scrutinizing identification and passes, deciding on eligibility of visitors to receive temporary passes; providing contractors and visitors with ID badges;
- examining and recording materials entering or leaving through these control points including staff equipment loans;
- accepting lost and found articles, recording, ensuring security until handed over;
- carrying out special assignments, eg. private rentals, evening film shows, dances or meetings at the Centre, providing assistance to OPP and Metro Police for the reception and protection of VIPs visiting the Centre, providing information to visitors, etc.;
- investigating visitor or staff security issues;
- ensuring that staff members adhere to OSC safety and security requirements;
- assisting in morning opening and evening closing of the Centre;
- performing initial investigations re: theft, loss, damage, etc. when necessary, including photographing accident scenes and other events.

Provides effective public relations/customer care services for visitors by performing duties such as: (20%)
- providing requested information to telephone callers (before/after hours) and to visitors, eg. location of Centre and
exhibits, content of exhibits, ways of reaching Centre, accommodation and facilities near by, entertainment or sports attractions in the City, etc.; promotes and upholds the OSC corporate mission and values;
- rendering first aid and administering to visitors comfort pending arrival of 911, eg. illness, epileptic seizures, injuries, fainting, excess of alcohol and drugs (Officers are trained in standard first aid and CPR).

Performs related and auxiliary duties such as: ( 5%)
- preparing and submitting reports to Supervisor(s) of Protective Services, as required;
- raising and lowering Centre flags; noting and replacing damaged and/or missing flags as required;
- staffing traffic barriers and opening or closing as required;
- opening and locking doors for personnel in the Centre;
- assisting with the evacuation of building in the event of fire, bomb or power failure and as fire wardens under the direction of the Chief Fire Warden or Alternate;
- performing special assignments at the request of and defined by the Associate Director, Visitor and Environmental Protection;
- rekeying and cutting keys, installing and removing lock cores as requested;
- assisting with the photographing of staff for Photo-ID system including the assembly and distribution of Photo-ID cards;
- other duties as required.

Staffing and Licensing :

Valid St. John's Ambulance Standard First Aid certificate and CPR certification.

Knowledge :

Security experience in a public oriented environment.
Working knowledge of Fire Alarm Systems; Card Access Control systems; locking mechanicisms (mag locks);
Public Address systems; Security Cameras systems (CCTV).
Knowledge of the powers of a Security Officer.
Knowledge of emergency procedures and fire evacuation plan.
Knowledge of WHMIS, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Trespass to Property Act.

Skills :

Advanced level of oral French Language profecicGood physical condition and the ability to deal tactfully with all types of incidents and individuals.
Strong communication/interpersonal skills. Customer care/public relations skills. Basic computer skills.
Ability to conduct investigations and prepare reports. Ability to work in a team environment.

Freedom of Action :

Ability to prepare detailed incident reports and document occurrences in written form. Ability to deal effectively with multiple tasks simultaneously, sometimes under stressful conditions.
