Purpose of Position :

To perform a variety of analytical chemical testing of environmental samples. To perform test procedures and quality control documentation. To conduct/direct maintenance of the analytical equipment.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Conducts chemical/physical analyses/tests of sewage (e.g. surface water, groundwater and industrial waste) by:
applying established methods/procedures and using manual/automated analytical systems/equipment such as Automated Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, U.V. - Visible Spectrophotometry, Automated Potentiometry, etc., to analyze aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, etc.;
performing such tests as total and dissolved phosphorus, pH, conductivity, biological oxygen demand, etc.

Operates the required analytical equipment by:
preparing concentrations of standard solutions for the calibration of method;
preparing reagents and apparatus;
preparing required samples for presentation to the analytical system (e.g. pretreatment step such as digestion required for some parameters);
establishing and setting appropriate instrument parameters to provide optimum operating conditions; and,
performing maintenance of the analytical systems (e.g. replacing pump tubing, deuterium and hollow cathode lamps, etc.).

Performs/records quality control evaluations by:
calculating test results from measurements;
examining results, identifying discrepancies and initiating re-analysis where appropriate;
maintaining analytical records of work;
ensuring normal laboratory safety precautions;
organizing and maintaining an up-to-date file on acceptable laboratory procedures (e.g. sample preparation, analysis, and safety); and,
transmitting results for approval.

Ensures the precision and accuracy of results by:
calibrating analytical instrumentations;
analyzing quality control standards and/or external standards;
maintaining quality control records;
taking appropriate corrective action when control measures indicate a problem;
establishing quality of reagents to ensure acceptability by analyzing blank solution; and,
using a systematic troubleshooting approach to resolve instrumental and/or procedural problems.

Carries out additional analysis in the area of method and equipment evaluation by:
assisting with implementation of new equipment/methods acquired;
assisting field staff in the selection of appropriate tests/sample containers and/or preparation of reagents; a
providing demonstrations of analytical procedures during laboratory tours to utility plant operators.

Maintaining adequate stocks of supplies by:
initiating orders for purchase of replacement/new items;
assisting in data entry of laboratory inventory system;
ensuring work area is kept clean and safe;
assisting in the shipping and receiving area of the laboratory;
performing clerical duties, UMIS sheet, cost transfers, monthly billings;
typing vehicle reports, petty cash, budget data, computer input, etc.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and knowledge required to perform job at full working level :

Graduation from a post-secondary laboratory science program with related work experience or an equivalent acceptable combination of post-secondary education and related work experience. Thorough knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry or aqueous solutions, atomic absorption and vapour generation and U.V. visible spectrophotometer; potentiometry; gravimetry, titrimetry and conductivity.

Proven ability to operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment. Good communication and organization skills; ability to work independently; ability to diagnose and resolve technical problems. Understanding of safe operating practices required in a laboratory setting.

Working knowledge of the Sanyo PC using both Lotus 1-2-3 and D-base languages is preferred.
