Purpose of Position :

To provide skilled electrical maintenance, repair and installation services for a variety of security and industrial electrical systems and related equipment in a secure detention/secure custody youth centre; assist other tradesmen as required.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Under the general supervision of the Position, provides skilled electrical maintenance, repair, and installation services by:
• Discussing projects and requirements with supervisor to determine needs, priorities. recommend procedures and methods based on technical knowledge
• Checking all aspects of facility electrical systems on a continuing basis, reporting requirements to supervisor, detailing material requirements, etc.
• Maintaining the refrigeration units by performing necessary electrical and mechanical repairs; maintaining automatic Young Person room door and electronic entrance/egress door systems including various local and master control switch panels repairing or replacing cables, transformers. switch-gear, control gear as necessary
• Maintaining the stand-by diesel generating equipment used in emergencies; repairing and maintaining Telephone System
• Replacing faulty equipment or wiring, motors, switches, appliance points, as necessary
• Preparing drawings and specifications for and installing net'/ locking and control systems, fire bell and emergency alarm electrical light systems, e.g. installation of florescent lights: rewiring motors, etc., after relocation: maintaining T.V. installation system and radio system; replacing fuses, rewiring electrical equipment, e.g. Lamps. motors. etc.
• Poling, greasing, cleaning electric motors. replacing brushes, bearings, coils, etc.
• Supervising resident helpers assigned; instructing resident helpers in electrical methods, use of tools, assigning and checking work, ensuring custody and safety of resident helpers
Performs other maintenance duties by:
• Estimating materials required and submitting requirement to supervisor Indicating quantify, type etc.
• Recommending replacement of equipment and tools
• Maintaining a record of work carried out, materials used, etc.; forwarding information to supervisor
• Assisting other maintenance staff in the carrying out of major maintenance repairs, or plant overhaul; forwarding record to Maintenance Supervisor as required
• Assuming responsibilities of the Maintenance Supervisor in his/her absence
• Assisting other tradesmen as assigned
• Management has the tight to assign additional duties.

NOTE: The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and instruction of young persons assigned to the area, escorting the youth to and from work, assessing performance, preparing reports, ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements, maintaining building, youth and staff security, conducting tool end equipment inventories, and advising of contentious issues

Staffing and Licensing :

Successful completion of the recognized apprenticeship in the electrical trade and certification from the Ministry of Skills Development. Good working knowledge of techniques end equipment used in electrical trade. Ability to prepare drawing specifications and to estimate material and labour requirements. Good physical condition. Ability to instruct, demonstrate, and monitor.

Knowledge :

Working knowledge of regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, tools, equipment methods, practices. Ability to work from plans and/or drawings. Ability to supervise and instruct youth helpers. Job requires knowledge of relevant by-laws and codes in order to ensure the safety and of installations, and to aid in determining methods. Job requires knowledge of drawings and plans in order to ensure the proper layout of installations, wiring, switches, etc. Job requires knowledge of estimating labour and material requirements to install and replace electrical equipment. Job requires knowledge of requirements for working within confined spaces. Job requires knowledge of First Aid methods, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS for the safe handling of chemicals/products.

Skills :

Position requires that all electrical equipment is maintained according to manufacturing specifications and all preventative maintenance work is completed. Job requires assessing when all electrical installations should be replaced. Job requires following detailed drawings plans, and preparing suitable sketches in order to perform proper installations. Job requires estimating labour time and material requirements to install and replace electrical equipment in systems. Job requires determining correct tools and methods needed to install, maintain and repair electrical installations and equipment. Job requires finding causes of defects in systems and deciding/recommending on method to repair. Job requires discussing in detail requests from clients for new installations or extensive repairs, explaining technical matters in readily understood terms. Job requires discussing replacement of fixtures and methods of installation with Maintenance Supervisor

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working in accordance with government codes, regulations and guidelines, and the established practices and procedures of the electrical trade. Job requires selecting work methods in accordance with government codes and by-laws. Job requires deciding work sequences to perform installations and repairs. Job requires making recommendations to the Maintenance Supervisor on the methods of carrying out new installations and on requirements for replacement of fixtures and electrical work. All work is to be completed with as little disruption to the youth centre's day-to-day operation as possible. Work is subject to regular review or monitoring for progress and results i.e. updating Maintenance Supervisor on progress of new installations and repairs.
