Purpose of Position :

To provide cleaning services for exhibits at the Ontario Science Centre. To assist with minor exhibit and cleaning equipment maintenance.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Ensures that all exhibits at the Ontario Science Centre are kept clean and presentable by: cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, washing, polishing exhibits including computer keyboards, monitors, etc. and storage areas; performing simple disassembly I assembly display cases, exhibit parts for cleaning e.g. unlocking, unbo!Ung, unscrewing;
- erecting temporary screens/panels, stanchions or barriers to isolate/contain areas for cleaning and/or repair;
cleaning all exhibits inside and out as required, as well as high level cleaning such as track lighting, the tops of exhibits, vents, filters, fans, areas behind locked barriers and exhibits;
performing high level cleaning with the use of ladders. scaffolding, forklifts and/or hydraulic lifting equipment;
reporting any exhibit supply shortages, observed breakdowns/malfunctions, defective equipment and other maintenance needs using Electronic Maintenance computer system;
- removing all cleaning items from the Electronic Maintenance computer system when duties are complete; maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment;
manually moving exhibits, as required, disposing of garbage and refuse requiring significant physical demands in moving/lifting relatively heavy objects, and in climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolding, etc.;
ensuring that exhibit and workstation doors are locked and utilities are switched on/off, as required for cleaning purposes
- assisting in warehouse cleaning/organization;
- following health and safety procedures including wearing personal protective apparel and safety devices as required when using I disposing of cleaning chemicals, compounds and solvents, when using cleaning equipment e.g. brooms, mops, wet I dry vacuums, electric buffers and polishers and when using ladders, scaffolding, forklifts and/or hydraulic lifting equipment..


2. Assists with routine exhibit and cleaning equipment maintenance by:
changing light bulbs in exhibits or exhibit areas as required; replacing filters, fluids in exhibits;
changing dry belts on vacuum cleaners, oiling and adjusting floor cleaners;
assisting skilled trades team members as required, performing simple tasks as directed such as moving exhibits, erecting scaffolding, organizing storage areas, carrying equipment, operating basic hand and power tools e.g. screw drivers, hammers, power drivers, sanders etc.

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of cleaning equipment, methods and products purchased for specific exhibits, exhibit cabinetry and working parts I components (i.e. so that products that do not impair the operation of the interactive exhibits). Knowledge of the safe operation of cleaning equipment (brooms, mops, wet/dry vacuums, electric buffers and polishers), ladders, scaffolds, forklifts and hydraulic lifting equipment. Knowledge of safe handling and disposal of cleaning chemicals and debris. Knowledge of basic hand and power tools (electric and manual screw drivers, drill guns).

Skills :

Manual dexterity to operate cleaning equipment, basic hand and power tools. Ability to understand oral and written instructions assist in orienting new staff, read Material Safety data Sheets, update inventory of cleaning supplies Initiative to accomplish daily cleaning routines with minimal supervision, identify the need to replenish supplies, identify and report problems to supervisor e.g. malfunctioning exhibits, risks to visitors e.g. cracked or broken display windows, broken steps, guard rails, torn carpeting, leaking containers, etc. Problem solving skills to identify and perform minor repairs on cleaning equipment, reassemble and install exhibit parts. Interpersonal skills to work effectively with others. Computer skills to update maintenance system, complete on-line attendance sheets, emails.

Freedom of Action :

Work is carried out under detailed instructions and procedures established by the Associate Director, Exhibit Production assisted by the Operations Group Leader who are accountable for the overall planning, organization, supervision, control and inspection of work, scheduling and workfiow, resource allocation, purchase of materials and resolution of work related problems.

Judgement
Judgement is exercised as to when to requisition supplies so there are sufficient cleaning products and equipment replacement parts on hand at all times. Judgement also used prioritizing daily tasks e.g. where possible, carrying out tasks that would otherwise disrupt visitors before public opening time. Situations not covered by specific instructions or procedures are referred to the supervisor or manager as are problems such as equipment breakdown, unusual supply requests and other work-related problems.

Accountability
Position is accountable for keeping assigned exhibits and surrounding areas at an acceptable cleanliness level, carrying out tasks in an approved and safe manner and maintaining an acceptable level of productivity.
