Purpose of Position :

To perform professional nursing care to Youth at the Cecil Facer Youth Centre. To provide first aid treatment to Centre staff as required. To provide other related health care services.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Assessing youth through physical examinations and and interviews to review youth medical and mental health history.

2. Assisting in the development and implementation of health care treatment plans in consultation with youth, physicians and other health care professionals.

3.Observing, assessing, recording and reporting youth's health care treatment, condition and behaviour, evaluating progress and completing reports/documents.

4. Identifying health care services and resources for the youth and arranging for the youth's access to necessary services.

5. Ensuring safety and security of health care services area, equipment, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.

6. Ability to process, transcribe and act according to specified Medical Orders and provide general nursing services at the Cecil Facer Youth Centre.

Staffing and Licencing :

Current registration as a registered nurse in Ontario.

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of general nursing theory and standards of the College of Nurses of
Ontario. Job requires knowledge of nursing policies and procedures to enhance the quality of
youth care and nursing services by adhering to nursing standards and promoting quality
assurance programs within the Health Care Department. Job requires knowledge of health
care methods and medical procedures in order to assess health of youth through physical
examinations and interviews and to provide care to employees as required in emergencies,
injuries and illness on the job. Job requires knowledge of health care services and resources
available to youth and to ensure access to these services. Job requires knowledge of health
care treatment plans to assist in the development and implementation of these plans in
consultation with youth, physicians and other health care professionals. Job requires
knowledge of documenting the application of the nursing process and participation in health
care in accordance wit the policies of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and internal
departmental policies. Job requires knowledge of the security of medications, supplies and
equipment including the cleanliness of the health care environment and of equipment used.

Skills :

Job requires communication skills to evaluate nursing care given to determine if it meets the
needs of the youth. Job requires interpersonal skills to work cooperatively and collaboratively
with health care team members and youth centre staff. Job requires analytical and research
skills to plan appropriate care with the youth, based on self care abilities and security constraints.

Freedom of Action :

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Health Care Coordinator with access
to Ministry health pare procedures and processes as required. Judgement is required to
evaluate health care situations in the absence of the physician and when deciding on a course
of action, referring to the physician as necessary. Judgement is required to communicate
issues with the Nursing Coordinator or physician. e.g. non-compliance with medications.
