Purpose of Position :
The provision of a pharmacy technician functions in the CPRI Pharmacy including the preparation and release of medications, inventory management, quality assurance, administrative, systems maintenance functions and other related duties as assigned by the Pharmacist.
Duties / Responsibilities :
1. Performing technical requirements for medication preparation and order distribution by:
- Operating pharmacy integrated software/unit dose packaging system and dispensing functions.
- Receiving prescriptions/orders and performing technical and quality assurance verifications.
- Responding to medication alerts as directed by the Pharmacist.
- Performing pharmaceutical calculations.
- Selecting, preparing and packaging medications for dispensing.
- Mixing/preparing extemporaneous compounds according to formulation guidelines.
- Preparing labels and containers, repacking and labelling medications.
2. Auditing inventory control and medication stock by:
- Monitoring stock levels and making sure there are sufficient quantities for optimal operations.
- Replenishing medications for residential units, night cupboards, emergency boxes, first aid kits and the emergency cart/bags.
- Preparing and placing orders from specified sources.
- Receiving, reconciling and reporting supplies purchased.
- Reporting and taking action to correct invoice/order discrepancies.
- Operating pharmacy software for inventory management functions.
- Issuing and replenishing supplies.
- Rotating stock and monitoring expiry dates.
- Identifying expired products for disposal or returning to the manufacturer for credit; performing physical inventory as required.
- Recycling and/or destroying medication and records returned from residential areas.
- Ensuring proper disposal of expired medications per regulatory requirements.
3. Performing administrative duties by:
- Generating/updating all pharmacy software and packager unit records for refills, medication reviews, stop order lists, medication administration records and monthly reports.
- Updating pharmacy records in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Establishing and maintaining client profiles.
- Maintaining and auditing inventory records, including those for narcotics and controlled drugs.
- Answering telephones and referring calls as required.
- Maintaining statistics related to drug use, resident movement and inventory.
- Preparing and typing special lists, forms, labels, memos, etc.
- Preparing documentation to return or destroy pharmaceuticals.
- Regular operator maintenance of automated packager unit and other pharmacy equipment.
- Maintaining the pharmacy environment to ensure safety and effectiveness of service.
- Providing information or education regarding pharmacy services or technical operations.
- Responsible for the operation of the department within the scope of delegation by the Chief Pharmacist and regulatory authority of a Technician when required during Pharmacist's absence.
4. Ensuring quality assurance by:
- Maintaining active surveillance of unit protocols and operations to identify and respond to issues.
- Contributing to pharmacy policy and procedures development and compliance.
- Contributing to developing and implementing system efficiencies and quality compliance practices.
- Maintaining safe working conditions.
- Performing other pharmacy related duties as assigned.
Staffing and Licensing :
Registered Pharmacy Technician registered by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) or a graduate of a Pharmacy Assistant Program recognized by the OCP and will attain the Registered Pharmacy Technician registration with the OCP by January 1, 2015.
Knowledge :
Job requires the status of Registered Pharmacy Technician registered by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) or a graduate of a Pharmacy Assistance program recognized by the OCP and will attain the Registered Pharmacy Technician with the OCP by January 1, 2015.
Job requires experience as a technician in a pharmacy, preferably in a hospital or similar environment.
Job requires knowledge and technical ability to perform functions to regulatory standards such as operating pharmacy integrated software/unit dose packaging system and dispensing functions.
Job requires knowledge of pharmacy legislation, regulations, guidelines of practice, medication distribution processes, pharmaceutical calculations and inventory management practices for selecting and preparing medications for dispensing.
Skills :
Job requires technical skills to operate pharmacy software systems such as integrated data management, when reporting and dispensing information.
Job requires interpersonal skills to work independently or with a professional team and other internal and external customers.
Job requires verbal communication skills to answer telephones, working with team, other employees and the general public.
Job requires written communication skills to prepare pharmacy information, communicate with internal and external contacts, compose or edit pharmacy documentation, prepare internal operations memos, forms or other correspondence.
Job requires organizational skills to respond to workload priority changes, peak output periods, ensuring proper stock levels and ensuring sufficient quantities for optimal operations and when updating pharmacy records in accordance with regulatory standards.
Job requires problem solving skills to correct invoice/order discrepancies and to perform pharmaceutical calculations.
Freedom of Action :
Job works under the direction of the Chief Pharmacist with responsibility for the technical aspects of dispensing and compounding drugs in accordance with CPRI policy and procedures. Job is accountable to maintain records of controlled and narcotic drugs including selecting and preparing package medications for dispensing. Job is required to make all technical decisions with respect to medications preparation referring to the supervisor matters not covered by established pharmacy regulations, directives, policy and procedures.
