Purpose of Position :

To provide semi-skilled services in trades pertaining to the maintenance of the Institution and provide general maintenance services. Assists contract and government service trades persons as required. To supervise assigned inmate helpers.

Duties / Responsibilities :

80% Performs semi-skilled maintenance duties usually associated with the skilled trades and assists contracted/Government Services trades persons by performing such duties as: - developing and maintaining a preventative maintenance program and identifying items which require checking on a daily/weekly/monthly basis; - scheduling maintenance activities; coordinating or undertaking new projects such as installing piping and plumbing fixtures, installing appliances and equipment, masonry/carpentry projects; - checking plumbing and performing maintenance as required (i.e. replacing toilets, plumbing lines, taps, unplugging clogged drains, sewage lines and traps); performing minor electrical maintenances (i.e. changing bulbs, fuses, switches and fixtures); welding for items such as brackets, grills, screens; coordinating larger maintenance activities with ORC; assisting ORC contract staff and trades persons (i.e. electrician, plumber, service technicians) by ensuring adequate security (i.e. tools accounted for, turning off electricity); - supervising assigned inmates in general upkeep of areas in the detention centre.
20% Performs other related duties such as: - maintaining an adequate supply of maintenance stock and supplies; - maintaining work records, estimating material requirements, and costs of purchasing equipment; - warning inmates in minor misconduct charges and completing reports as required; - correcting security breaches in assigned work areas; - ensuring all tools are accounted for during/after work assignments; - other duties as assigned.

Staffing and Licensing :

Completion of apprenticeship training in one of the skilled trades and certification by the Ministry of Labour.

Knowledge :

Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in a wide variety of general maintenance work, i.e. plumbing, welding, electrical; Ability to work from blueprints, specifications, shop-drawings in order to perform a variety of maintenance tasks; Experience in operation of commonly used hand and power tools; Knowledge of security practices, i.e. issuing of keys; Good communication skills in order to instruct and supervise inmate helpers; Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
