Job Specification

Purpose of Position :

Assist and escort contractors and government services tradespersons as required and to provide semi-skilled services in trades pertaining to the maintenance of the Jail.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Performs semi-skilled maintenance duties usually associated with the skilled trades and assists and escort contracted/government services tradespersons by performing such duties as:
- checking plumbing and preforming maintenance where possible, i.e. replacing underwriting flushometers, taps, replacing, toilets and water lines, unplugging clogged sinks, drains, sewage lines and traps.
- performing routine maintenance tasks requiring limited skills and the use of appropriate power and hand tools.
- performing minor electrical maintenance; i.e. changing bulbs, fuses, switches, fixtures;- cleaning and servicing electrical motors and repairing where possible, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers etc.
- cleaning, oiling and adjusting and installing locks, patching cracks and plaster, brick or cement and painting when required; fabricating steel, such as brackets, grills and screens.
- Assisting tradespersons i.e. electricians, plumbers by ensuring adequate security i.e. tolls are accounted for, turning electricity off etc.
- Regularly checking valves and pressure gauges on boilers and condensation pumps; supervising inmates in maintenance of grounds and general keep jo jail.

Staffing and Licensing :

Must have valid Driver's Licence.

Knowledge :

Knowledge and demonstrated experience in a wide range of general maintenance work e.g. plumbing, electrical etc. Ability to work from specifications and drawings in order to preform a variety of maintenance tasks, experience in the operation of commonly used hand and powered tools. Knowledge of security practice, i.e. issuance of keys.

Skills :

Job requires good communication skills in order to coordinate contractors and tradespersons coming into the Jail. Incumbent must be able to manage his/her/ time and prioritize accordingly. Job requires to have the ability to physically preform duties of the position. Job requires problem solving skills in order to determine the electrical and plumbing malfunctions. Job requires the safe handling of hand and powered tools.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working in accordance with Ministry polices and guidelines and local Standing Orders. Incumbent works under minimum supervision. Job requires referring situations not covered by established polices and procedures to the Deputy Superintendent for directions.
