Purpose of Position :

To provide practical training in hairdressing salon services to inmate student workers and provide hairdressing services to the offender population. Supervising offenders during instruction period. Performs other related duties as required

Duties / Responsibilities :

60% provides practical training in hairdressing salon services to inmate student workers by performing such duties as: instructing in proper salon procedures, safety and hygiene, by outlining principles of proper work habits, public hygiene in the salon, personal hygiene of hairdresser, study of rules regarding imitation, methods of sterilization of equipment, etc. providing practical training by demonstrating techniques on the use of hairdressing equipment such as heating caps, curling irons, etc. and outlining safety rules governing the use of the equipment;- demonstrating and Instructing in the proper methods of trimming, shampooing, colouring, pin-curling, finger-waving, hairstyling, etc.;- teaching basic theory related to hairdressing methods such as the structure of the hair, the relationship between hair structure and hair style etc. teaching the principles and techniques of manicures;- explaining and demonstrating correct methods of facial treatment, use of cosmetics, etc. 25% supervises offenders during instruction period by: overseeing, training and directing Inmates who provide hairdressing services; evaluating offender students' work in areas of work habit, behaviour and responsibility and providing offender behaviour reports for institutional records, Parole Board, etc. maintaining discipline, supervising inmate students' work and ensuring that adequate safety measures are observed; exercising constant vigilance to ensure the security and safety of the offender in the Beauty Salon and to safeguard electric and hand equipment; assigning work to offenders as a form of rehabilitation; as required providing reports certifying the number hours offenders worked In the hairdressing salon15% performing other related duties: ensuring cleanliness of beauty parlor and maintaining equipment, supplies and requisitioning same through appropriate personnel; reporting only necessary repairs to equipment to supervisor; maintaining the hairdressing salon; keeping records of operation; assuming responsibilities for the care and security of tools and equipment; performing the more complex hairdressing functions for the offenders

Staffing and Licensing :

Current valid certificate of qualification in the hairdressing trade (as required by the Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act.)

Knowledge :

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the hairdressing trade; ability to use and demonstrate the operation of hairdressing equipment, materials and a variety of grooming aids; effective communications skills to Instruct, demonstrate and explain hairdressing techniques to unskilled workers and to write work habit/occurrence reports as required; ability to control and instruct student inmates in a reform environment; knowledge and experience using a variety of hairdressing products; experience providing hair care advice to clients as well as performing various types of hair treatments; experience teaching and providing instruction to others; ability to maintain workplace safety and security; knowledge of health and safety legislation and institutional policies regarding inmate care and security.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working in accordance with established institution procedures. Job requires referring matters not covered by established procedures to supervisor.
