Purpose of Position :

To carry out maintenance services for the institution's building and equipment.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. 70% Provides maintenance services by: - Monitoring and conducting regular maintenance inspections of the institution's building systems including plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling, ventilation, communication, security eg; locks and emergency eg: fire; - Performing and/or coordinating plumbing duties including repair, servicing and replacement of water lines, valves, traps, washers, toilet slushmeters, showers, basins, etc; - Performing and/or coordinating electrical duties including repair, servicing and replacement of bulbs, fuses, switches, fixtures, appliances, alarms, motors, etc; - Performing and/or coordinating general maintenance duties such as cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, patching, plastering, replacing, re-building, fabricating, painting, testing, welding, etc; - Coordinating and/or undertaking new projects eg: installing doors, constructing shelves, etc; - Advising supervisor when outside tradespersons, contractors or MGS representatives are required for major work projects; escorting, coordinating and assisting tradespersons, contractors, MGS Staff and others assigned to carry out major repairs, maintenance, installations and new projects ensuring security procedures are followed; - Ensuring work is in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety and quality standards, institution requirements and job specifications; - Arranging for offender helpers; training and supervising offender helpers to perform routine tasks eg: painting; writing reports eg: occurrence and laying misconduct charges as required; - Providing leadership to staff assigned to assist the completion of maintenance activities. 2. 30% Perform other duties, such as: - Liaising with senior institution staff and making recommendations concerning maintenance/overhaul/special project priorities, procedures and schedules, material/equipment/labour requirements and costs, maintenance agreements and providing technical information to local institution committees eg: Occupational Health & Safety; - Maintaining records including equipment gauge readings, condition of equipment, maintenance/servicing required and performed; - Maintaining, as per Fleet Management directives and minor servicing eg: changing oil and spark plugs of institution vehicles; - Maintaining tools, equipment and workshop including supplies in appropriate order: - Assigned Note: Supervises offender helpers for majority of working day, Custodial Responsibility Allowance (K-1 Salary Note) applies.

Staffing and Licensing :

Qualified in one or more of the skilled trades and Licensed by the appropriate Ministry. First Aid and Heartsaver Certified.

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of one or more of the skilled trades, including techniques and appropriate license issued by Government of Ontario in given trade(s). Job requires knowledge of relevant legislation, municipal by-laws and codes, provincial building codes, in order to ensure the safety and integrity of installations, and to prevent injuries to staff or inmate helpers, and to aid in determining work methods. Job requires knowledge of blueprints, schematics and specification diagrams/drawings and Ministry and government requirements for correctional facility security, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry, and elevated work to assist in performing work and ensuring safety of workers and inmate helpers. Job requires thorough knowledge of operation/maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning/fire systems, and associated instrumentation/control systems. Job requires advanced knowledge of at least one recognized skilled trade and a working knowledge of other skilled (e.g. carpentry, plumbing, welding, brick laying) and semi-skilled trades in order to perform major and minor repairs, renovations and construction projects. Job requires knowledge of computers and computer systems related to monitoring automated systems for mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls and prepare reports, and respond to internal mail.

Job requires advanced knowledge of at least one recognized skilled trade and a working knowledge of other skilled (e.g. carpentry, plumbing, welding, brick laying) and semi-skilled trades in order to perform major and minor repairs, renovations and construction projects. Job requires knowledge of computers and computer systems related to monitoring automated systems for mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls and fence security monitors (CCTV); and to access information on warranties and service agreements, to prepare reports, and respond to internal mail.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working in accordance with government codes, regulations and guidelines; established practices and procedures within trades. Job requires working within facility security and health and safety guidelines, policies, procedures and directives to ensure no security breaches or injury to workers, staff and helpers. Job requires deciding on work sequences in completing installations and repairs to ensure maximum efficiency in the use of skilled trades and helpers, and equipment and materials. Job requires incumbent to recommend methods and changes to procedures for carrying out new installations and repairs.
