Purpose of Position :

As a member of the Ontario Parks team, under the general supervision of the Assistant Park Superintendent, provides group leadership for a variety of technical duties and program responsibilities associated with the day-to-day operation of a Provincial Park.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Provides group leadership for technical, operational and monitoring duties for the successful day-today operation of the campground and day use facilities by:

Directing, training and assisting campground staff with park operations such as park store operations, maintenance, fee collection, natural heritage education, enforcement as per provincial legislation, regulations, policies and procedures;

Assisting in the preparation of work plans and in the full implementation of approved work programs;

Preparing and keeping current annual operating strategies and emergency plans;

Preparing written correspondence, answering written and verbal inquiries from interest groups, public and other government agencies;

Ensuring campground and day use facilities are operational and a high standard of public safety is maintained;

Assist taking beach water samples and potable water samples at designated locations, to ensure compliance with provincial legislation;

Preparing administrative and legal reports;

Ordering equipment and supplies;

Maintaining park operations within assigned budgets;

Ensuring client satisfaction;

Handling complaints, both oral and written, and referring problems to Park Managers;

Enforcing provincial statutes (i.e. Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, Liquor License Act, Highway Traffic etc.);

Documenting warnings, laying charges, attending court as required;

Maintaining an accurate record of all enforcement activities, compiling occurrence, seizure reports;

Promoting user compliance with park rules through public contact;

Assisting the Assistant Superintendent with staff hiring, training, scheduling, performance management issues and performance appraisals;

Advising workers of actual and potential dangers in the workplace and required precautions.

2. Performs other duties as assigned, such as:

Assisting other members of the park team during vacation/illness and other peak workloads;

Assisting other Ministry program areas as required.

Note: The incumbent shall, while in the workplace, conduct themselves in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any workplace practices as directed by their immediate supervisor. The incumbent shall report any hazards of which they are aware to their immediate supervisor.

Staffing and Licencing :

Ability to be designated as a Park Warden and meet Ministry certification criteria and standards in use of force.
Valid Class "G" Driver's Licence.
Valid Emergency First Aid Certificate.
Ability to work shifts including, nights, weekends and statutory holidays.

Knowledge :

Good working knowledge of resource management principles and techniques as they apply to parks as well as relevant act regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines.

Good working knowledge of park management techniques, programs and operating regulations.

Knowledge of Ministry purchasing and accounting policies, procedures and best business practices.

Knowledge of and ability to use personal computers including word processing, record keeping, reservation, electronic mail, internet software applications.

Working knowledge and skill in the maintenance of a variety of office and light powered equipment such as lawnmowers, tractors, ATV's, chainsaws, boats, small hand tools, etc.

Working knowledge of general building, grounds keeping maintenance.

Good working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and those regulations made under the act as they apply to the workplace and the work being performed.

Skills :

Strong leadership, interpersonal organizational, mathematical, oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently, follow and carry out instructions, work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as per schedule.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working within established legislation, policies, and procedures. Job requires adhering to and accessing relevant Ministry guidelines, directives and established practices. Matters of contentious nature are referred to the supervisor. Job requires performing tasks with minimal direct supervision and on initiative.
