Purpose of Position :

Under the general supervision of the Area Supervisor, you will provide assistance and support to District specialists in conducting a variety of activities related to implementing the District's Natural Heritage, Fish and Wildlife, Species at Risk, and Resource Management Planning programs. You will undertake research and field inventories to identify and evaluate plant and animal populations and their habitats, create records and reports to document species occurrences, and participate on committees and working groups to provide input to ongoing planning and resource management exercises. As an active junior member of an Area Team, you will provide assistance by: researching biological data; conducting field inventories; communicating with staff, landowners and other partners regarding the Ministry's resource management programs; updating natural resource databases; and participating in resource management and rehabilitation projects.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Under the general supervision of the Area Supervisor, you will assist District Ecologists, Biologists, Planners and other staff, as assigned, to:
• Research biological information on fish and wildlife species and their habitats.
• Using biological knowledge, participate in field inventories to identify and evaluate plant and animal populations and their habitats.
• Transfer data on site locations of fish and wildlife habitat and occurences to MNR databases (e.g. NRVIS, NHIC).
• Assist with the preparation of reports, file notes and other communication materials documenting work activities.
• Participate on planning teams and working groups to provide input to ongoing planning and resource management exercises.
• Using biological knowledge and communications skills, assist field staff in communicating with resource management partners, stakeholders, and members of the public regarding the Ministry's resource management programs.
• Other duties related to the District's Natural Heritage, Fish and Wildlife, Species at Risk, and Resource Management Planning programs as assigned.

Knowledge :

Knowledge of biology and ecology including biodiversity and species at risk issues. Knowledge of legislative and planning tools that provide for the protection and management of fish and wildlife resources and species at risk in Ontario. Basic knowledge of the flora and fauna of eastern Ontario. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written). Well-developed organizational and research skills. Basic skills in computer word processing and use of spreadsheets. A valid Ontario driver's license and the ability to travel and work in remote field locations.
