Purpose of Position :

To provide cleaning and minor maintenance services in the Toronto Intermittent Centre with 320 intermittent male inmates. Shift work and weekend work may be required.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Job requires: 1) Performing physical cleaning services such as operating heavy duty industrial cleaning equipment, erecting and using scaffolding, lifting/moving office equipment and furniture to allow cleaning, lifting and disposing of garbage and refuse. 2) Maintaining premises by cleaning, dusting, washing woodwork and tiles, walls and ceilings, cleaning inside and outside windows, light fixtures and vents, removing wax and finishing floors, cleaning washrooms, filling soap dispensers, replenishing supplies. 3) Performing general services such as, separating recyclable materials, unloading supplies from trucks, locking doors, switching off utilities, and reporting defective equipment. 4) Maintaining records and security of cleaning supplies used and requesting supervisor to requisition replacement supplies as needed, e.g. cleaning materials, toilet paper, soap. 5) May supervise and instruct selected offender helpers including writing reports (incident/performance/behaviour), ensuring safety and security of offender helpers and security of tools, equipment, materials and work area. * May Supervise inmate helpers for majority of working day, custodial Responsibility Allowance (K-1 Salary Note) applies

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of cleaning methods and use of industrial cleaning equipment, e.g. floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, materials to perform required cleaning and housekeeping duties. Job requires knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) for safe handling of chemical solutions used for cleaning, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and institutional security practices/procedures to ensure compliance with standards, proper equipment operation/utilization and to maintain the safety and security of the work area and offender helpers, e.g. posting visible signs for wet floors, placement of ladders.

Skills :

Job requires analytical and problem-solving skills to determine the type of cleaning agent used for various cleaning tasks. Job requires analytical and planning skills in determining daily priorities, recognizing equipment problems, need for maintenance or repairs and deficiencies or shortages in supplies, recognize security and workplace hazards so that corrective action can be prompt, and when to report problems to the supervisor. Job requires oral communication skills to convey information about the use, care and storage of cleaning agents and solvents and about the use and care of cleaning/maintenance equipment to offender helpers, identifying breaches of security. Job requires written communication skills to maintain records of the use of cleaning materials and other supplies. Job requires interpersonal skills to make staff and offenders aware of, and to understand the need for caution on wet floors and around ladders or other obstructions where cleaning is taking place.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires work to be performed in accordance with institutional policies and procedures and established cleaning methods, under general supervision. Completed tasks are reviewed for adherence to processes and procedures such as cleanliness of floors, adequacy of supplies. Job requires situations not covered by established methods and procedures to be referred to the supervisor. Job requires maintaining records of supplies used, determining daily priorities for own work and deciding which maintenance issues to refer to supervisor. Job is accountable for the counts, safekeeping and security of tools, supplies and equipment in shop and on all assigned work.
