Purpose of Position :

To provide support related to internal and external communication and marketing programs and activities for the Geographic Information Branch (GIB) and Land Information Ontario (LIO).

Duties / Responsibilities :

Assists in developing and delivering marketing products and services by:
• Preparing content and revising design/navigation of the GIB/LIO websites
• Using desktop publishing and other techniques to produce specialized marketing and communications products, including: presentations, demonstrations, posters, advertisements, fact sheets and trade show materials
• Planning and representing GIB at marketing and communications events, including conferences, public forums, trade shows and other events
• Creating and sending electronic communications such as e-blasts, using/creating social media and other technologies to convey marketing and communications messages
• Creating document-based and interactive, on-line training materials, surveys and other forms of client testing and public consultation

Assist in the development of marketing and communications plans for Geographic Information Branch (GIB) and Land Information Ontario (LIO) by:
• Researching marketing and communications requirements to support branch policy and program initiatives
• Understanding and conforming to OPS/MNR/SIRD/GIB/LIO procedures for internal and external communications
• Assisting the Communications Specialist with the provision of marketing and communications consulting services to the branch
• Researching media strategies and preparing draft terms of reference for communications projects

Providing research, analysis and organizational support to GIB/LIO management and staff by:
• Investigating possible marketing/communications methods and content for certain target audiences and stakeholder groups
• Managing client contact lists and client relationship tools such as e-blasts for GIB/LIO initiatives and programs
• Using the OPS on-line document management system and file management techniques to organize and share documents internally and externally
• Facilitating the translation of documents into French using the OPS translation services

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of strategic marketing and communications planning theory and techniques in order to contribute to the development and evaluation of marketing and communications plans, and to assist Communications Specialist with the provision of consulting services to the branch.

Job requires knowledge of writing styles and techniques, grammar, spelling, punctuation and organization of text to write and edit various communication products, including technical communications products such as: reports, presentations, professional demonstrations, surveys, e-blasts and training materials.

Job requires knowledge of the use of tools such as website design (content creation and layout), desktop publishing, print production, multimedia, social media and special event planning/facilitation in order to assist with the development and implementation of marketing and communication products and initiatives.

Job requires knowledge of research, analytical and organizational theories and practices in order to assist with marketing and communications (including information management and client management) support for GIB/LIO management and staff.

Job requires knowledge of modern electronic technologies, including: computer software programs (Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat Reader/Writer), desktop publishing (Adobe InDesign), graphics manipulation (PhotoShop), the internet and social media in order to research, analyze and organize data, prepare marketing and communications products, and communicate with internal and external clients as needed.

Job requires knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Skills :

Job requires well developed written and oral communications skills in order to assist with the creation of a variety of material for GIB/LIO program initiatives and projects; to promote understanding and support for MNR/SIRD/GIB/LIO, and to occasionally represent the branch at conferences and public events.

Job requires interpersonal skills (including tact, diplomacy, good judgment, ability to work in a team and ability to work independently) in order to work with internal staff and external consultants,

Job requires skills in the use of computers, computer software and social media to assist in the development and implementation of marketing and communication products.

Job requires research, analytical and organizational skills in order to assist with assessing client/branch requirements and developing marketing and communications products to meet the business needs (including information management and client management) of GIB/LIO management and staff.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires working within government and ministry policies, standards and guidelines. Job requires providing advice on branch communication needs for decisions to be made by others.

All work is reviewed and/or approved by branch management and communications staff. Job requires referring to branch management and communications staff all problems/issues such as contentious issues, conflicting requirements or reference to senior management.
