Purpose of Position :

To provide translation services to the Ministry, all levels of courts, Boards and Commissions where applicable, ensuring such services are delivered in a professional, competent manner. To act as a corporate resources and mentor to new freelance interpreters. Deliver testing and training to new and current interpreters as required.


Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Translates texts of normal to high complexity, pertaining to carious fields by:
•Ensuring that the product delivered to clients is complete with no omissions or additions to the original text;
•Ensuring that the product is accurate and the original meaning, feeling and intent of the text has been maintained;
•Ensuring that the product is well written and the translation is grammatically correct, is adapted to subject matter and target group;
•Ensuring that the product is consistent with government terminology;
•Ensuring that the product is free of spelling, punctuation or typographical errors.


2. Mentor to new and existing freelance interpreters by:
•Providing on the job training;
•Mentoring the quality of interpretation of freelance interpreters in accordance with prescribed systems/procedures to ensure adherence to Ministry standards, reporting deficiencies to Manager;
•Providing technical guidance on procedural matters or interpretation/ translation issues, providing information on and/or clarifying directive, instructional memoranda etc. regarding translation matters.

3. Provides corporate guidance as required by:
•Providing information on the interpreter program and current courts operational processes to assist in the development of policies, procedures and processes;
•Assist in preparation of lexicons and terminology banks;
•Participates in studies and surveys in matters related to provision of multi-lingual interpretation/translations services as directed;
•Deliver testing and training to new and current interpreters as required;


Staffing and Licencing :


Proficiency in oral and written French at the superior level.

Knowledge :


Job requires superior oral and written communication skills, both in terms of vocabulary and facility with grammar and sentence structure, in English and French to provide written translations for/to all levels of court e.g. criminal, civil, family, provincial offences court, and small claims court. Job required knowledge of legal terminology to ensure accurate rendering of legal terms and ideas and knowledge of related areas/matters e.g. firearms, narcotics. Job required knowledge of ministry policies regarding confidentiality and interpreter conduct, and or courtroom proceedings. Job requires knowledge of adult testing and training methodologies.

Skills :

Job required superior oral and written communication skills, both in terms of vocabulary and facility with grammar and sentence structure in English and French in order to provide written translations on a variety of subjects including testimony of witnesses, providing specialized, technical and scientific opinion and evidence. Job researches terminology of subject matters for the purpose of translation. Job required interpersonal skills to interact with officials of court, legal counsel and the parties to an action and gain/maintain the confidence of those for whom the translation is provided and strive to ensure that individuals for whom translation is provided understands the message rendered. Job requires communication skills to provide testing to interpreters and training to individuals groups of individuals.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires work to be performed under the guidance and supervision of a section manager or senior court interpreters.
