Purpose of Position :

To develop, facilitate, and coordinate education and training programs for the Ontario fire service.

Duties / Responsibilities :

60% Developing, coordinating, delivering, revising, and evaluating, as part of a self-managed instructional
team, advanced and specialized educational training programs in assigned subject areas for the fire
service using recognized and accepted adult learning techniques including mix-mode, lectures, debates,
role-playing, discussion and audio-visual, including multi-media.

25% Adapting teaching model to student need(s) and abilities, while maintaining course content.
Developing, administering, scoring, and evaluating written, oral and practical examinations within
approved criteria.

15% Providing the adult learner with remedial assistance and or referrals. Remaining current with new
technologies and theories in education and training delivery by reading journals, manuals, books,
attendance at seminars/conferences, and through continuing education. Consulting with fire service
and external agencies, to provide educational and training information and advice for identified
learning needs. Providing direction and assistance to seconded instructors, providing input and
making recommendations to the manager re: their performance.

Knowledge :

The job requires advanced knowledge of adult education principles, techniques, and practices, curriculum development, and models of teaching, to develop, deliver, and design curriculum and education and training programs. The job requires knowledge of fire department operations and fire services personnel roles and responsibilities, in order to ensure education/training programs and curricula meet user requirements.

Skills :

The job requires the ability to conduct research and evaluate modern fire protection subjects, methods, and procedures. The job requires the ability to work in a personal computer assisted environment and to use software relating to word processing, data management, and computer generated presentations.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires that services be provided in accordance with government, ministry and college policies. Job requires instructors have latitude to identify / respond to training needs, design courses, submit budget estimates, develop learning materials and lesson plans to satisfy client and college goals and objectives. Job requires independent decision making, as well as working collaboratively and assuming responsibilities inherent with working on a high performance team, often with no direct supervision.

Job requires working independently away from college site on outreach initiatives, without direct supervision, with wide latitude to make decisions / take actions in the best interest of the college and the Office of the Fire Marshal.
