Located in the western GTA region, the Ontario Correctional Institute has been recognized as a leader in correctional treatment. What can I expect to do in this role?

As a Psychologist, you will:
• Provide varied psychological services including the planning, conducting and/or supervising individual and group therapy sessions for inmates
• Assess inmates' risk, criminogenic needs, and responsivity concerns and make recommendations for addressing targets
• Develop and communicate individual therapeutic treatment programs compatible with institutional resources
• Develop and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment programs and recommend alternatives
• Be part of a multi-disciplinary team regarding inmate mental health and care
• Participate in research and ongoing program development with Research Director
• Perform clinical duties including the preparation of evaluative and clinical reports
• Assist with staff training programs
• Provide consultation and advice to the institutional management team on inmate related matters
• Respond to department inquiries as may be required by the Senior Management Team

How do I qualify?

Mandatory Requirement

• You are currently registered as a Psychologist in the Province of Ontario with a minimum requirement of 'registered with supervised practice'

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• You have demonstrated expertise in psychology, including a full range of psychotherapeutic and assessment techniques (risk factors, responsivity issues, and diagnosis)
• You have knowledge of the science, practices, and ethics of psychology as applied within a forensic/correctional setting and relevant provincial/federal statutes
• You have knowledge of community resources and services
• You are able to plan, develop and apply individual and group treatment to a diverse population of offenders
• You can organize, co-ordinate, and supervise graduate students providing psychological services

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can communicate information regarding assessment approaches, findings, and treatment/rehabilitative activities both to clinical professionals and correctional staff
• You have demonstrated maturity, discretion and sensitivity in order to discuss diagnosis, treatment and progress with inmates and their families or advocates
• You have diplomacy and tact to gain confidence of staff and supervisor within a multidisciplinary correctional treatment setting
• You are able to develop rapport and foster a productive therapeutic relationship with difficult and complex offender clients

Analytical Skills and Judgment

• You can determine the most appropriate diagnostic approach based on offender history and current indicators
• You are able to evaluate the efficiency of treatment and rehabilitative programs and to identify effective solutions
