What can I expect to do in this role?

In this position, you will:
• Operate, maintain and provide a variety of library services
• Utilize automated systems to input/update and search data, type correspondence and reports
• Maintain the safety and security of the library work area
• Plan and organize work and develop and maintain working relationships with inmates and staff
• Perform descriptive cataloguing of library materials
• Assist users in locating and retrieving information, books, periodicals and conducting straightforward literature searches
• Provide information to library users on library stock, borrowing process, inter-library loan process/services and circulation services
• Provide input into inmates disciplinary/performance reports
• Prepare correspondence, statistical reports on library activities and records of library stock
• Supervise residents using the area. Supervise and instruct inmates workers for a majority of working time

How do I qualify?

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have demonstrated knowledge of and experience with library procedures and practices (including circulation, references, minor book repairs, cataloguing, inter-library loans, serials/publications management, etc.) in order to operate, maintain and provide a variety of library services
• You are able to understand and comply with institutional security policies/procedures in order to maintain the safety and security of the library work area
• You are proficient with software applications and automated systems to input/update/search data as well as to prepare correspondence and reports

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You are able to perform descriptive cataloguing of library materials by applying appropriate rules and procedures
• You can search for books and other materials for library users and provide assistance in locating and retrieving information, books, and periodicals
• You can conduct straightforward literature searches using manual and/or automated systems
• You are able to plan and organize work

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can provide information to library users on library stock, borrowing process, inter-library loan process/services, and circulation services
• You can maintain working relationships with inmates and staff
• You have writing skills to prepare correspondence, statistical reports on library activities, records of library stock
• You have demonstrated tact and courtesy in order to respond to user requests, supervise inmate helpers, handle behavioural issues as they arise
