Make the most of your leadership and engineering expertise with the Ministry of Transportation!
As part of the Provincial Highways Management Division, Highway Standards Branch, you will play a lead role in conducting traffic engineering research and in the development of traffic engineering policies, procedures, and standards.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this position, you will:
• Provide engineering expertise to regions, consultants and external partners on traffic control, traffic operations and traffic control devices and systems.
• Prepare appropriate documents and justifications for legal proceedings and inquiries to give evidence and represent the ministry.
• Manage transportation projects and provide engineering, technical and administrative direction to staff and consultants.
• Review new technology applications and external activities to ensure compatibility/compliance.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Must be licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
• Class 'G' driver's licence with acceptable driving record.

Highway Traffic Engineering Knowledge

• You have extensive knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of civil engineering related to highway and traffic engineering, with expert understanding of traffic control devices and systems.
• You have knowledge of traffic operations, control, policies, directives, procedures and standards, including local, national and international standards and practices, and related legislative acts to provide expert advice and guidance to regions, contractors and external partners.
• You have knowledge of policy development and project management to develop and recommend changes to current policies, standards and procedures and manage complex projects.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You have strong planning and organizational skills to coordinate projects simultaneously.
• You have strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve problems, develop engineering proposals and assess ministry policy implementation.
• You have advanced engineering and mathematical skills and knowledge of capacity calculations, complex intersection and signalised intersection operations, including traffic signal progression, and central access.

Communication Skills

• You have strong oral communication skills to provide information, act as an expert on engineering and technical matters, and deliver training.
• You have strong written communication skills to write technical reports and manuals using computer software and traffic engineering software.

Interpersonal and Relationship Management Skills

• You have developed relationship management skills to work with colleagues, all levels of management and the public.
• You utilize strong interpersonal skills to develop new policies, standards and procedures, and provide guidance to various stakeholders.
