Do you have demonstrated experience in the planning, development and delivery of nutritional care and food service programs to large populations? If so, consider this position of Senior Nutrition Consultant with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
• Plan, develop, implement, and monitor program standards, policies and procedures for effective delivery of nutritional care and food service programs
• Plan menus for regular and restricted diets to meet the requirements of the Canada Food Guide and Dietary Reference Intakes
• Perform menu and raw food cost calculations to determine per diem costs
• Provide professional advice to senior management and guidance to committees on food service policies and procedures, techniques and technologies
• Prepare, review, and update Food Services Diet Manuals
• Develop, organize and deliver food and nutrition continuing education
• Lead and/or coordinate project teams/project initiatives
• Chair/participate in program advisory and implementation committees
• Investigate and respond to complaints from inmates, their families and lawyers, and the Ombudsman related to food services/nutritional care.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must be registered as a Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of Ontario

Technical Knowledge

• You have experience with nutrition, food science and food safety standards, food services programs and systems and disease and illness in order to prepare regular and restricted diet menus and set food specifications
• You are familiar with correctional food service systems, operations, and management to recommend procedural changes as necessary and to liaise with stakeholders to formulate and resolve issues
• You have knowledge of professional, provincial and federal legislation, regulations and guidelines, standards, policies and procedures as they relate to food services
• You can provide in-service training and nutrition counselling/education and provide nutrition advice to medical staff
• You have knowledge of cultural and religious practices and their relationship to food practices in order to incorporate them in the development of program standards and guidelines
• You have an understanding of generally accepted accounting procedures and principles and government financial policies and procedures to monitor and provide input to ministry food service budget

Project Management and Consultation Skills:

• You have project management expertise of methodologies, guidelines, standards and planning, risk management and mitigation strategies
• You have consultation and advisory skills to obtain and provide up to date nutrition and food service information
• You have excellent organizational skills to lead program and project initiatives, develop work plans with multiple priorities and resource requirements and to manage special projects and priorities
• You have effective human resources management skills and food service administration skills to advise on food service management methods, production systems, materials and equipment as well as calculate food and labour costs

Research and Analytical Skills:

• You have expert research techniques to investigate issues and food services trends
• You are able to gather and analyze information from external sources for incorporation into ministry programs, policies, practices and standards of operation to support decision-making

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• You have excellent oral and written communication skills, professionalism and tactful assertiveness
• You are able to interact with all levels of the ministry, inter-ministry and service providers
• You can respond to information requests, develop option papers, submissions, business cases and provide advice
• You have knowledge of adult learning methods to prepare, develop, and deliver user-training materials and adapt training to meet group learning needs

Computer Skills:

• You are proficient with a variety of office software and specialized foodservice software to produce documents, prepare educational materials, create menus, maintain dietary databases, perform calculations and manage large volumes of information and statistical data
