Healthcare professionals treat our injuries and protect us from illnesses everyday, but who is there to ensure their safety? The Ministry of Labour, Occupational Health and Safety Branch, is building a team of highly skilled professionals to specifically address the unique needs and concerns of this critical occupational group, as well as other occupational sectors.

If you are an expert in occupational health or occupational medicine and you are passionate about ensuring the welfare of Ontario workers, then you need to join our dynamic team.

What can I expect to do in this role?

• Provide leadership to a team of Medical Consultants and provide professional expertise and direction for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policies and programs to ensure workers are protected in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Identify needs, research and investigate options, and establish initiatives to prevent occupational disease due to biologic, chemical or physical agents.
• Build relationships with key stakeholders in the healthcare sector, including hospitals, academic communities, not-for-profit groups and agencies to exchange ideas, address issues and collaborate on improving health and safety for healthcare workers, and workers in other sectors.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Degree in medicine from a university of recognized standing.
• A current licence to practice medicine in Ontario.

Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety

• You have knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and current developments of occupational health and safety medicine.
• You have knowledge of changing workplace environment conditions, needs and techniques.

Leadership, Communication, and Relationship Management Skills

• You have leadership, teamwork, program management and supervisory skills to lead program activities and specialists, assess performance, and lead projects.
• You have project management skills to lead concurrent activities and produce high quality results within established timeframes.
• You have oral and written communication skills to consult and negotiate agreement on policy and program approaches and resolve sensitive issues with management and labour.
• You have relationship management skills to consult and network with stakeholders to build successful relationships.

Analytical, Research and Problem Solving Skills

• You are able to interpret and apply relevant legislation, policies, programs and standards.
• You have an understanding of the health and safety system organizations and stakeholders.
• You have research skills to conduct research activities and ensure the integrity of results.
• You have analytical and evaluation skills to co-ordinate the diverse activities of programs and assess deliverables.
• You have problem solving skills to identify, investigate, and establish controls in potentially hazardous situations, provide expertise, and assess risks and options.

Policy Development Skills

• You have policy development skills to develop policy and ensure that recommendations and deliverables are integrated with related OH&S systems.
