The Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre seeks an enthusiastic, experienced and service-oriented individual to operate and maintain a library within the correctional facility.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• Organize and maintain the library's collection of books, periodicals and publications
• Provide circulation and reference services, arrange inter-library loans, as well, acquire, catalogue and classify library materials
• Assist offenders with inquiries and provide information on library stocks, services and procedures
• Maintain a manual and automated circulation system
• Organize and re-arrange books on shelves
• Assist in the development and implementation of new library services and programs
• Supervise and instruct offender workers

Please Note:
• This position will require occasional travel within the region
• This position supervises offender helpers. Salary note for Custodial Responsibility Allowance (K-1) applies

How do I qualify?

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of and experience with library procedures and practices (including circulation, references, minor book repairs, cataloguing, inter-library loans, serials/publications management, etc.) in order to operate, maintain and provide a variety of library services

Analytical and Coordination Skills

• You can perform descriptive cataloguing of library materials by applying appropriate rules and procedures
• You can search for books and other materials for users, and provide assistance in locating and retrieving information, books and periodicals
• You can conduct literature searches using manual and/or automated systems
• You can plan and organize work effectively

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can provide information to users on library stock, borrowing process, inter-library loan process and services, and circulation services
• You can maintain positive working relationships with offenders and staff
• You have good writing skills to prepare correspondence and statistical reports on library activities and library stock
• You can demonstrate tact and courtesy when supervising offender helpers and responding to requests

Computer Skills

• You are proficient with software applications and automated systems to input, update and/or search data, as well, to prepare correspondence and reports

Other Essential Skills

• You are interpret and apply institutional security policies and procedures to maintain the safety and security of the library work area
