What can I expect to do in this role?

As a Sergeant, you will:
• Direct, guide and supervise staff on assigned shifts
• Ensure the effective and efficient operation of correctional programs
• Co-ordinate institutional security as required
• Be responsible for the overall operation of the institution on evenings, nights and weekends
• Effectively supervise correctional staff in the direct/indirect supervision model

How do I qualify?

Leadership Knowledge and Skills:

• you have demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills to manage, direct and support staff performance and development
• you can interpret and apply collective agreements, directives and policies related to human resources (i.e. Public Service Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code)
• you can act with integrity even when it is difficult to do so
• you have proven crisis management and problem-solving skills to respond in emergency or challenging situations, while managing stress effectively

Correctional Knowledge:

• you have knowledge of offender behaviour and population moods in order to direct staff and determine appropriate intervention
• you have knowledge of correctional theory and practices related to the admission, discharge, care, custody, and control of offenders

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• you have interpersonal and oral communication skills to work effectively with staff and stakeholders
• you have written communication skills to prepare reports using a computer

Other Related Skills:

• you can interpret and apply related legislation to ensure compliance (i.e. Workplace Discrimination and Harassment Policy, Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Criminal Code, Mental Health Act, institutional standing orders)
• you have time management skills to plan, coordinate and organize yourself and others

    Please note that this position is under review as part of the Management Job Evaluation Plan (MJEP) Project. MJEP is a new job evaluation system for manager and non-bargaining specialist positions in the Ontario Public Service.
