What can I expect to do in this role?

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Ontario Provincial Police, seeks a qualified person to provide 24-hour security services for Ontario government buildings, its contents, parking garage and grounds, or those used by the Government of Ontario that are secured by the OPP including physical safety and security to its occupants and visitors.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory:

Ability to pass an OPP background security investigation.

Must possess a valid Class G driver's licence.

Must possess a valid certificate of physical fitness through Applicant Testing Services http://www.applicanttesting.com/.

Ability to pass training in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Ability to obtain and maintain Special Constable status as per the Police Services Act.

Must meet and maintain annual Use of Force training and specifications according to policing standards for Special Constables.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of relevant sections of federal and provincial legislation including Criminal Code, Trespass to Property Act, Mental Health Act, Liquor Licence Act, and WHMIS. Knowledge of relevant ministry policies, practical procedures (e.g., building fire, alarm and access system procedures), protocols, regulations and manuals to conduct patrols and security checks.

Knowledge of safety and security techniques and practices, e.g., restraint techniques, appropriate use of force, crowd control, emergency and evacuation procedures, to identify and apply them appropriately to the situation.

Skills to use computers for data entry, word processing and security operations functions.

Knowledge and ability to operate a range of equipment including emergency phone and radio, CCTV camera and other surveillance equipment.

Written communication skills to document incidents and prepare reports.

Oral communication skills to greet, escort and provide information and directions to building occupants and visitors including dignitaries, employees and the general public. In some instances, the nature of the communications can be contentious. Must exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with protestors, uncooperative members of the public or disruptive individuals.

Interpersonal skills to intervene (during disturbances and other volatile situations), as well as to gather information, explain and exchange information with peers, emergency personnel (Fire, EMS), police officers and other Detachment personnel.

Ability to problem solve by gathering and assessing information.
