The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change- York/ Durham District Office is looking for a candidate who wants to work in the field and with the public as an environmental law enforcement officer

What can I expect to do in this role?

• Respond to inquiries from the media, elected officials, and the public.
• Interview complainants and owners of emissions sources to determine the validity and significance of the complaint.
• Analyze issues and evaluate options for dealing with simpler environmental problems.
• Review and assess routine technical and operational reports to ensure the appropriate steps are being taken to comply with Ontario's environmental legislation.
• Interact with demanding and confrontational clients and stakeholders.
• Collect evidence.
• Testify in court and hearings.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Valid class G2 Ontario driver's license

Knowledge of Environmental Sciences:

• You have the technical knowledge to understand basic industrial and municipal pollution control, basic industrial processes, sewage disposal systems and waste management to identify pollution sources/situations.

• You can demonstrate knowledge of environmental sciences in order to carry out inspections and audits, and assess environmental impacts.

• You have knowledge of environmental sample collection in order to monitor regulatory compliance.

• You have knowledge of legislation such as the Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Pesticides Act and the regulations as they apply to industrial process and environmental management.

• You have proficiency with PCs and working knowledge of Windows-based applications, including word processing, spreadsheet and email software to enter corporate data or access environmental information. Some familiarity with geographical information systems (GIS) an asset

Problem Solving Skills

• You have problem solving and analytical skills to identify cause and source of simpler pollution problems.
• You have evaluative skills in considering the nature, extent, and seriousness of non-compliance with the law and recommending corrective actions.
• You have the evaluative skills to review routine submissions for acceptability and adherence to ministry legislation, policies, and objectives.
• You have the ability to carry out work independently and make on the spot decisions and recommend corrective actions.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You have demonstrated writing skills to produce clear, concise and grammatically correct written reports, memoranda and letters.
• You have sound oral communication skills to communicate regulatory requirements, explain findings and results, and actions required to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
• You have good interpersonal skills for dealing with concerned and/or displeased clients, industrial representatives, the public and the ability to deal with a variety of diverse client groups
