As a Program Specialist for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, you will implement and evaluate fire and life safety programs to reduce fires, injuries, fire deaths, assist fire departments to meet their legislated mandate to provide public fire safety education in their communities.

What can I expect to do in this role?

•develop a variety of educational strategies including short term programs to prevent fires and reduce loss of life and property losses
•lead and assist fire departments to meet their legislated
mandate to provide effective fire and life safety education programs in their communities
•provide group leadership to section staff to carry out their duties
•develop partnerships to support effective fire and life safety education programs
•provide technical advice and assistance to the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council, the Ontario Fire Service and related organizations

How do I qualify?

Technical Knowledge

Technical Knowledge
You have:
• knowledge of fire and life safety education programs, the Ontario fire services/operations and related legislation
• knowledge of statistical analysis, methods and practices regarding risk assessment, risk management, fire department management, fire protection and fire prevention services
• knowledge of the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of fire and life safety programs
• knowledge of latest developments, trends and programs in the field of fire and life safety
• knowledge of adult education techniques, curriculum development, and learning strategies to deliver educational workshops and training on fire and life safety.

Other Essential Knowledge

You have:
• Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of applicable OFM legislation, codes, statutes, regulations and bylaws
• Knowledge of fire service development, organization, and management practices to fulfill the expected leadership role in development, implementation and evaluation of effective programs
• Knowledge of media strategies, practices and tools to promote public safety programs and initiatives and to instruct fire service personnel

Communication, Influence and Presentation Skills

• You have strong written communication skills to write proposals, news releases, and communicate information to staff , the fire service, and the public
• You can effectively present at conferences, conduct training sessions and conduct media interviews
• You possess sound reasoning and negotiation skills to influence a diverse client and interest groups with opposing perspectives and viewpoints

Leadership, Organizational and Program Development Skills

• You have leadership skills to provide technical direction and facilitate training
• You have ability to delegate and assess tasks, duties and projects
• You have program development skills to conduct needs analysis, conduct research, focus groups, to identify delivery strategies

Other Essential skills

You have:
• Good organizational and planning skills
• Analytical, research and evaluation skills to identify trends and issues and identify high risk and hard to reach groups
• Knowledge of and skill in using a variety of software applications including Word, PowerPoint and E-Mail.
