The Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal (AFRAAT) provides an independent, accessible avenue to appeal a variety of agricultural issues (e.g. land drainage, marketing board decisions, crop insurance, farm property classification, the treatment of agricultural employees, licensing issues and various other topics).
This is your opportunity to oversee the day-to-day operation of this important service.
What can I expect to do in this role?
• oversee the day-to-day operation of the Tribunal by supporting pre- and post-hearing activities, identifying potential panel members, attending hearings in various locations across the province, preparing records of proceedings, etc.
• liaise with Tribunal members, external stakeholders, legal counsel and hearing parties
• provide advice and assistance to the Tribunal Chair
• provide advice on hearing practices and procedures
• coordinate the Ministry's response to contentious issues
• preparing agency accountability documents such as the annual report and business plan
How do I qualify?
Mandatory requirement:
• You are proficient in English as well as oral and written French at an advanced level.
Knowledge of legal processes and procedures:
• You have knowledge of natural justice, procedural fairness and the adjudicative tribunal system.
• You have experience interpreting legislation and directives (e.g. Agencies and Appointments Directive, the Adjudicative Tribunals Accountability, Governance and Appointments Act, 2009).
• You have knowledge of legislation and regulations governing the confidentiality of information.
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• You have interpersonal and relationship management skills to build strong working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
• You have strong oral communication skills to explain tribunal rules, practices and procedures.
• You have strong written communication and computer skills to prepare a variety of hearing notices and correspondence for stakeholders and members of the public.
Other important skills:
• You have analytical and problem solving skills to provide options and recommendations for dealing with complex and sensitive issues.
• You have organizational and planning skills to oversee the various operational functions of the Tribunal.
