Are you a results oriented, dedicated professional interested in undertaking diversified industrial, municipal and private pollution abatement programs and making a positive impact to environmental protection in the District? If so the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change has an exciting opportunity for you by assessing and promoting and enforcing compliance with environmental legislation related to air, water and land pollution

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

•Independently conduct complex inspections, assess compliance, prepare and review technical reports
•Identify complex environmental problems and solutions
•Provide technical expertise and advice on pollution control and environmental legislation requirements
•Recommend remedial and/or legal action and ensure implementation of abatement programs
•Testify in legal proceedings; prepare and issue Provincial Officer's Orders
•Maintain effective liaison with stakeholders, the general public and clients
•Monitor, and report on a wide variety of pollution sources, and participate in the Environmental Response Program

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Valid class G Ontario driver's license or equivalent as recognized by the province of Ontario
• Job requires advanced oral French language skills.

Specialized Knowledge and Experience:

• You have demonstrated knowledge of the theories, scientific principles and practices of environmental sciences, industrial/municipal processes and pollution controls
• You have knowledge of contaminated site assessment techniques, spill assessment and clean-up techniques, sample collection and field measurement techniques
• You have demonstrated knowledge and experience in environmental legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Pesticides Act), regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, and other statutes (e.g. Municipal Act, Fisheries Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act)
• You have demonstrated field experience and ability to work independently, and under pressure to meet conflicting and changing deadlines

Problem Solving Skills and Judgement

• You have strong problem solving skills to identify underlying issues, link issues with regulatory requirements and recommend appropriate corrective measures to address challenging situations
• You can identify and take necessary, appropriate and timely action in response to complex and/or critical issues
• You have judgement to evaluate and consider situational factors to make independent, timely decisions that align with policies, procedures and legislation.

Enforcement and Compliance Expertise

• You have experience identifying situations of non-compliance and assessing the associated level of risk to determine appropriate corrective actions to achieve environmental and human health outcomes
• You can accurately interpret, apply and enforce policies, procedures and legislation

Concern for Quality and Standards

• You have integrity to ensure your actions are consistent with organizational values, policies and codes of conduct
• You are able to monitor and evaluate work quality and processes against policies, standards and regulations

Communication and Relationship Management Skills

• You have oral communication and active listening skills to explain complex policies, procedures and techniques and help ensure information is understood
• You have written communication skills to accurately document information and prepare reports
• You have experience developing and maintaining relationships, responding appropriately and providing direction to diverse internal and external clients in a professional manner
• You can influence and persuade others to adopt a specific course of action
• You have the ability to identify potential conflicts, facilitate open and constructive dialogue and proactively address and help diffuse potential conflicts
• You use computer software applications (such as for Word Processing, Spread sheets, database and Network applications) to prepare letters, tables, reports, use electronic mail, and enter data or access information
